Phils top Dodgers in Buchanan's debut
May 25, 2014 - 6:01 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere went 4-for-4 with three runs scored behind David Buchanan, who pitched well in his major league debut to help the Philadelphia Phillies snap a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle installment of a three-game set from Citizens Bank Park.Buchanan (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley earlier this week as the Phillies placed ace Cliff Lee on the disabled list, needed just 66 pitches to get through five frames. Buchanan allowed two runs, five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
"David got some early groundballs," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "He did a nice job throwing strikes and he gave us a lift going five innings."
Chase Utley had a two-run homer and Jimmy Rollins drove in a pair for the Phils, while Revere matched a career-high with his four hits.
Dan Haren (5-3) went six innings, allowing five runs -- two earned -- with seven strikeouts to absorb the loss. Yasiel Puig went 2-for-4 with a run and has now hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games.
"Danny has really been doing what we expect him to do," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Haren. "He keeps us in the game. He did that today."
Revere's first double of the season set the table in the bottom of the first for Philadelphia. After Rollins was retired, Utley gave his young pitcher an early 2-0 edge, cranking a 1-1 offering over the wall in right field. A pop up to catcher A.J. Ellis was dropped earlier in Utley's at-bat, leading to a pair of unearned runs.
Buchanan's successful sacrifice bunt in his first major league plate appearance led to another set of runs in the second. The bunt moved Cesar Hernandez to second, and Revere's liner into center plated him. Revere moved to second on the throw home, and Rollins followed by smacking a line drive just over Dee Gordon's outstretched glove at second base, easily scoring the Phillies' speedy leadoff man.
LA scored in the fourth and fifth, but Buchanan avoided the big inning both times. Carl Crawford's grounder to first plated Justin Turner, who doubled to open the fourth inning, and Gordon singled home Erisbel Arruebarrena in the fifth.
Revere reached on an infield single to lead off the home half of the fifth and advanced all the way to third on Haren's throwing error. A Rollins RBI groundout made it 5-2.
Jake Diekman took over for Buchanan in the sixth and was touched for an unearned run. Puig started the frame by tripling to right, and a passed ball with two outs allowed Puig to score.
Diekman stayed in and tossed a scoreless seventh, Mike Adams pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Jonathan Papelbon pitched around a two-out single by Andre Ethier and walk to Ellis to pick up his 13th save of the season. Papelbon now has 299 career saves.
Game Notes
Phillies left fielder Domonic Brown left the game after the sixth inning with mid-back spasms. He is listed day-to-day ... The Phillies lead the season series, 4-2 ... Forty-four of Buchanan's 66 pitches went for strikes ... Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez (sore left calf) was a late scratch ... LA had won seven of eight in Philadelphia.
