Smith, Padres top Marlins
May 11, 2014 - 5:55 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Smith finished a single short of the cycle as the San Diego Padres took a 9-3 win over the Miami Marlins in the third of a four-game set.Smith had four RBI and scored twice, Chase Headley hit a three-run home run, and Everth Cabrera scored three times for the Padres, who have won the past two after dropping the opener in 11 innings on Thursday.
"Those guys in the middle of the order gave us production at its finest," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "Headley put a great swing on that homer he had, and Smith had a great night, too."
Eric Stults (2-3) gave up two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings for the win.
Casey McGehee hit a two-run home run and Reed Johnson drove in a run for the Marlins, who have dropped their past two after having a five-game winning streak snapped.
Nathan Eovaldi was touched for two runs on seven hits over five innings in the start. Carlos Marmol (0-3) gave up four runs in the sixth to take the loss.
"We've tried to keep getting him in there in different situations and it just hasn't worked," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Marmol.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the sixth, the Padres went on top against Marmol as Jedd Gyorko singled to bring home one run and Headley followed with a shot into the right-field seats for a 6-2 advantage.
Johnson doubled home Jeff Baker in the seventh to make it a three-run game, but Smith answered that with a two-run double in the seventh for an 8-3 advantage.
Yonder Alonso's RBI single in the eighth accounted for the final score.
McGehee launched a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Marlins a quick lead, but Smith tripled home a run in the first, then launched a solo home run in the third to tie the game.
