Padres try to keep bats hot against Marlins
May 10, 2014 - 3:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The arrival of the Miami Marlins meant good things for the San Diego Padres' bats, and they'll try to continue the momentum on Saturday night in game three of a four-game series at Petco Park. The Padres averaged just 2.6 runs -- lowest in the major leagues -- heading into the weekend, but they erupted for 10 runs on 13 hits in Friday's 10-1 triumph against Miami ace Jose Fernandez.
Jedd Gyorko had a career-best six RBI as the Padres pounded the Marlins.
Tyson Ross (4-3) fanned eight batters and allowed four hits and a run over seven innings to record his fourth win in his last six starts. Seth Smith went 3-for-5 with a two-run double for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid and won for just the third time in 10 games.
"Guys are capable of those types of performances," manager Bud Black said. "Not that Jedd (Gyorko) is going to hit two homers and hit a grand slam, but he's capable of knocking in some runs."
Gyorko had 23 home runs and 63 runs batted in as a rookie in 2013 an signed a five-year contract extension worth $35 million last month. This season, though, he's batting just .165 with four homers and 18 RBIs.
Fernandez (4-2) was shelled for six hits and six runs -- five earned -- in five-plus innings.
Marcell Ozuna homered for Miami.
Friday's loss was just the second for Miami in 11 games.
The Marlins will turn to right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who struck out 10 batters in his most recent start on Monday against the New York Mets.
He's pitched at least six innings in each of his seven starts and gone seven innings in the last two outings.
Eovaldi was 1-0 in his first two career starts against San Diego, then took a 4-2 loss on April 6 after allowing a three-run home run in seven innings.
San Diego starter Eric Stults was on the losing side against the Marlins in an April meeting and has put up a bloated 11.74 ERA in his last two starts against Miami.
There has been success in the past, however, as evidenced by his 6 1/3-inning, one-run effort in a 5-1 win last season at Petco Park.
He was dinged for three runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings of the Padres' 12- inning win over Kansas City on Monday, which was his most recent start.
The Padres lost two of the three games in south Florida early last month and are 7-11 in the past 18 meetings between the teams.
