Stanton hit in face in Marlins' loss to Brewers
Sep 12, 2014 - 4:26 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun and Matt Clark both smacked solo home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers topped Miami 4-2 in a game that saw Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton get carted off with a facial injury.Stanton suffered a laceration on the left side of his face when he was struck flush by a pitch from Brewers starter Mike Fiers in the fifth inning. Stanton was bleeding as he was lifted onto a stretcher and taken off the field in an ambulance cart.
"It's devastating for us. Devastating. I mean for his season to end like that ... that's not good," said Miami manager Mike Redmond.
The Marlins said Stanton was undergoing X-rays and a CT scan at a local hospital.
Aramis Ramirez and Scooter Gennett both knocked in a run for the Brewers, who won two straight to salvage a split of this four-game series at Miller Park and remain 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second wild-card spot.
Marcell Ozuna homered in a career-high fourth consecutive contest for Miami.
Fiers (6-2) cruised through the first three innings before escaping a bases- loaded jam in the fourth. The Marlins had runners on second and third with no outs after Stanton followed a Donovan Solano walk with a double down the left- field line. Fiers struck out three of the next four batters to end the threat.
Miami had its first two batters reach base again in the fifth. With two outs and men on the corners, Fiers drilled Stanton with a fastball.
Stanton was ruled to have swung at the pitch. Pinch-hitter Reed Johnson was called on to complete the at-bat and inherited an 0-2 count.
The next pitch from Fiers was up and in and hit Johnson on the right hand as he was swinging. The umpires ruled it an inning-ending strikeout.
The dugouts and bullpens emptied after Johnson was hit, with Redmond and Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee getting ejected.
Fiers was taken out of the game after the fifth with the Brewers up 4-0. He gave up only three hits, struck out eight and walked three.
"Fiers is pretty upset," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke. "He knows he didn't do it on purpose. Everybody knows that and he wants to make sure that they know that and I think that's case."
The Marlins got on the board in the eighth on Ozuna's two-out, two-run blast to right field. The inning began with Solano reaching on an error.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth to earn his 41st save of the season.
Braun, who didn't start the last two games to rest an ailing thumb, led off the second with a home run to right-center field against Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi (6-11).
Ramirez drove in a run with a ground-rule double in the third, and the Brewers scored two more runs in the fourth. Clark homered to left-center field and Gennett plated a run with a two-out single.
Eovaldi allowed all four runs on eight hits in four innings.
Game Notes
Braun tied Price Fielder for second on the Brewers' all-time home run list with 230 ... Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich went 0-for-4 to snap his hitting streak at 13 games ... After warnings were issued to both teams, Miami pitcher Anthony DeSclafani and bench coach Rob Leary were ejected in the sixth after DeSclafani hit Carlos Gomez with a pitch.
