Brewers try to better playoff chances with split of Marlins

Sep 11, 2014 - 2:17 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers are in search of a series split with the Miami Marlins when the two clubs close out a four-game set Thursday at Miller Park.

The Brewers recorded a 4-1 win on Wednesday to stay alive in the playoff chase, as Matt Clark homered for the first time in his career and Carlos Gomez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

"I don't really remember much of it," Clark said of his home run. "I think they gave me a concussion when I walked through the dugout, but it's definitely an awesome feeling to put us up by two right there."

Jean Segura scored a pair of runs for the Brewers, who ended a four-game losing streak and won for only the second time in 15 tries.

Wily Peralta pitched well in the win to claim his 16th victory (16-10) and limited the Marlins to a run in 6 2/3 innings. After taking a loss on Tuesday, Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 40th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Brewers hope to have outfielder Ryan Braun back in the lineup and he missed a second straight start Wednesday with a right thumb injury.

Milwaukee is five games off the NL Central lead and tied with Atlanta at 1 1/2 games behind for the second wild card berth in the National League. The Brewers will host Cincinnati next for three games.

Mike Fiers draws the start Thursday for the Brewers and is 5-2 with a 2.03 earned run average. Fiers is 5-1 in his last six decisions and threw 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in last Friday's 6-2 win over St. Louis.

Fiers has lost both of his career starts against the Marlins and is 4-1 in seven games (4 starts) at Miller Park this season.

Miami had its three-game winning streak stopped last night.

Jarred Cosart was solid through six innings in the loss, charged with two runs (1 earned) and four hits with seven K's and two walks.

Marcell Ozuna homered for a third straight game and Adeiny Hechavarria recorded a pair of hits in a losing cause.

"We were sloppy tonight. It wasn't our best defensive showing," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "At this time of year, every mistake will cost you."

The Marlins are 4 1/2 games off a wild card berth and will also visit Philadelphia and the New York Mets on this 10-game road trip.

Nathan Eovaldi gets the nod for Miami Thursday and he has a 6-10 record with a 4.19 earned run average. Eovaldi is 0-4 in his last five starts and the Marlins are winless in that time. In Saturday's 4-3 loss to Atlanta, Eovaldi gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Eovaldi has lost all four of his starts against Milwaukee and is 3-5 in 13 road assignments this season.

Milwaukee won two of three matchups with Miami from May 23-25 at Marlins Park and went 5-1 against the Marlins last season.
