Braun helps Brewers best Phillies

Apr 10, 2014 - 5:52 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun continued to be a thorn in the Phillies' side Wednesday as the embattled slugger legged out a two-run triple in the deciding eighth frame of the Milwaukee Brewers' 9-4 victory.

Braun, booed heavily at Citizens Bank Park during his three-home run barrage on Tuesday, stepped in against Antonio Bastardo (0-1) with two on and cleared the bags with a fly ball to the center field warning track.

Ben Revere tried making a diving catch but came up short, allowing Logan Schafer and Jean Segura to cross with the second and third runs of the inning. Mark Reynolds scored the go-ahead run earlier in the frame when Schafer's sharp one-hopper got by Ryan Howard down the first-base line.

Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, Reynolds added a two-run shot in the ninth and Aramis Ramirez added three hits and an RBI for the Brewers, winners of five straight after dropping two in a row to the Braves.

Marlon Byrd drove in two runs in Philadelphia's third straight loss.

Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez struck out nine over five innings and yielded four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits.

Hernandez was let off the hook after Byrd singled through a drawn-in infield in the fifth to plate Carlos Ruiz with the tying run.

Matt Garza was also left out of the decision after allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits over six frames. Tyler Thornburg (2-0) tossed two hitless inning in relief to pick up the win.

Milwaukee, off to its first 5-0 road start since winning its first seven away from home in 1987, got started early with two runs in its first at-bat.

"We've come on the road with a lot of adrenaline and we know we have a really good lineup," Gomez said.

Jean Segura beat out a bouncer to the right side, stole second and scored on Ramirez's base hit, and Braun, who walked between the hits, came around when Jimmy Rollins couldn't handle Jonathan Lucroy's sharp ground ball.

"We definitely have to tighten that up," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of the errors. "I don't know what to say about it. We work on it. We talk about it. Some of the plays are routine and we have to make routine plays."

Garza gave three runs back in the bottom half, the first coming via a balk, and the Phillies got two more following Scooter Gennett's throwing error. With runners on first and second and one out, Gennett rushed his throw to second and sent it into left field. Ruiz scored on the play, and Domonic Brown followed with a run-scoring groundout.

Revere robbed Gennett of a hit with an all-out diving grab in short right- center to start the second and nearly made a similar catch on Segura's blooper later in the frame. The ball, however, rolled out of his glove when he hit the ground, and Gomez scored the tying run.

Gomez took Hernandez deep to left in the fourth to break to 3-3 tie.

Game Notes

Braun went 1-for-4. He came in batting .405 (32-for-79) with 10 home runs and 21 RBI in 20 career games at Citizens Bank Park ... The Phillies went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position ... Revere and Ruiz each had two of Philadelphia's nine hits.
