Orioles beat Yankees in 11th to start DH

Sep 12, 2014 - 10:00 PM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Paredes' pinch-hit two-run double in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-1 win over the New York Yankees in the opener of a day-night doubleheader on Friday.

Paredes' winning hit into the right-field corner came after Chris Young broke a scoreless tie for New York with a homer in the top of the inning.

The Orioles won after finding out earlier Friday that 2013 home run king Chris Davis was suspended 25 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for an amphetamine.

The Yankees nearly had another dramatic win after beating the Tampa Bay Rays on Young's walk-off three-run homer in the Bronx on Thursday night.

Young, who also broke up Alex Cobb's no-hit bid in the eighth inning Thursday, drove a two-out, two-strike pitch from Brad Brach (7-1) over the wall in left.

In the bottom of the inning, Nelson Cruz drew a leadoff walk off Adam Warren (3-6) and pinch-runner David Lough went to second base on Ryan Flaherty's bunt. J.J. Hardy was hit by a pitch and Steve Clevenger walked with two outs to load the bases for Paredes, who lined the first pitch he saw to right to give the Orioles their fifth straight win.

Davis said in a statement that he "made a mistake by taking Adderall" -- a drug he was previously allowed to take under a therapeutic use exemption he said he no longer has.

The suspension began Friday and will run through the team's final 17 games in the regular season and into the postseason. The Orioles led the AL East by 10 games entering the doubleheader and are a good bet to win their first division title since 1997.

Kevin Gausman threw seven innings for Baltimore and gave up seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Brandon McCarthy pitched into the eighth inning for the Yankees, striking out six and walking none with just four hits allowed.

Andrew Miller struck out the side in the eighth inning after relieving Gausman and Darren O'Day set the Yankees down in order in the ninth after the Orioles blew a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth.

McCarthy had retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced before giving up a ground-rule double to Kelly Johnson leading off the inning, which forced the Yankees to pull him for Dellin Betances.

Johnson was the first Orioles runner to reach second base. He made it to third on Nick Hundley's bunt, sliding ahead of first baseman Mark Teixeira's throw.

But Johnson was caught too far off third on Nick Markakis' grounder to second baseman Stephen Drew, who checked him back to the bag before throwing over. Martin Prado's tag got Johnson on the arm for the second out

The Orioles had the bases loaded in the ninth against David Robertson, but Jonathan Schoop struck out.

Game Notes

The Orioles started a 10-game homestand ... New York was without Brett Gardner (abdomen) for a sixth straight game and Carlos Beltran (elbow) for the third game in a row. Chase Headley also missed the game after being hit on the chin by a pitch in the ninth inning Thursday.
