Victor Martinez helps Tigers end skid
Apr 26, 2015 - 12:03 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Martinez knocked in three runs to help the Detroit Tigers snap a four-game skid with a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.Rajai Davis went 2-for-4 with a walk, stole three bases and scored three of the Tigers' runs, while Miguel Cabrera walked four times -- three of them intentional.
Alfredo Simon (4-0) won his fourth consecutive start to open the season, limiting the Indians to a run on six hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings.
"We had some good pitching, we played good defense and we didn't give up that big inning," Davis said. "That was a big key to our success today."
Michael Brantley had four hits and drove in the lone Cleveland run.
He doubled with one out in the eighth and moved to third base on a Carlos Santana single, setting up a prime opportunity for Brandon Moss, who homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs Friday in the opener of this three-game series.
Tom Gorzelanny got Moss to ground into an inning-ending double play to preserve a 4-1 lead.
Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixth save.
Spot starter T.J. House (0-3) replaced an ill Trevor Bauer and lasted only three innings, allowing three runs on four hits and walking four.
"Obviously this was a last-minute thing," said House. "I wish I could have done a little bit better and gone a little bit longer to help everyone out ... but I can't be too disappointed since I didn't think I was going to be out there at all."
House faced immediate trouble in the first as the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Martinez plated a pair with a single, but House was able to avoid further damage thanks to a double-play groundout and a flyout.
An RBI single by Brantley put Cleveland on the board in the third, but Martinez drove in Davis with a blooper to center in the bottom of the inning.
Davis raced home on a two-out double by Ian Kinsler in the fourth.
