Rays down Rangers
May 10, 2015 - 3:55 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Longoria and Steven Souza Jr. hit 3-run homers and Andrew Bellatti dazzled in his major-league debut in the Rays' 7-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday.Matt Andriese started for Tampa Bay in place of Jake Odorizzi, who was scratched with the flu. Andriese, making his sixth appearance and third start of the season, departed after 3 2/3 innings of two-run ball.
Bellatti (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Durham on Friday when the Rays placed Alex Cobb on the 60-day DL, was the third reliever to take the mound for Tampa Bay. He pitched three perfect innings before getting betrayed by his defense in the ninth.
"I started to feel very comfortable in the start of my second inning," said Bellatti. "Especially if the offense is giving you run support like that, I think any pitching staff is going to feel comfortable."
Robinson Chirinos walked and Shin-Soo Choo reached on a softly hit single to right to put two on with one out. Bellatti then got Elvis Andrus to ground into what should have been a game-ending double play, but Tim Beckham fumbled the routine grounder to load the bases.
Brad Boxberger relieved Bellatti to a standing ovation from the home crowd and retired both batters he faced to end the game.
Andriese allowed two baserunners in the first inning, but struck out the red- hot Kyle Blanks for the third out to avoid any damage. His offense immediately picked him up in the bottom half.
Brandon Guyer singled and Souza walked, leading to Longoria's three-run blast to center off Rangers starter Ross Detwiler (0-4).
Detwiler put one man on base in the second, third and fourth innings, and Texas manager Jeff Banister had seen enough after he began the home fifth by walking Rene Rivera and allowing a Guyer single.
Anthony Bass relieved Detwiler but the move backfired, as Souza stepped in and smacked his fifth home run of the season.
"When guys come in, I believe they are going to make pitches for us," said Banister.
Detwiler was charged with five runs in four-plus innings.
Carlos Peguero supplied the only two Texas runs with his fourth-inning home run that followed Blanks' infield single.
Asdrubal Cabrera, who had three of Tampa's 10 hits, padded the lead with a solo homer to lead off the eighth.
Game Notes
The Rangers fell to 1-5 in Detwiler's starts this season. His last win came in a relief appearance on Aug. 17, 2014 ... Tampa Bay has taken two straight after losing Thursday's series opener ...
