Cano, M's down A's
May 10, 2015 - 6:11 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Robinson Cano had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-2 in the second of a three-game set.Nelson Cruz and Seth Smith each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for the Mariners, who have won two in a row on the heels of a 1-6 stretch. J.A. Happ (3-1) struck out eight and allowed a run on four hits and two walks over five innings to pick up the win.
Oakland committed four errors.
"I think that's the first time that's happened this year, taking advantage of errors," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said.
Jesse Hahn surrendered six runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and three walks over 5 1/3 frames for Oakland, which has dropped four straight. Mark Canha smacked a solo homer in defeat.
"We're in a funk and it can only get better from here," Hahn said. "Things aren't going our way, but we're going to keep our heads up."
The Mariners raced out to the lead after plating a pair of runs in the first and another in the second. Cano hit a two-out single in the first, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Cruz's double. Kyle Seager then walked and Cruz scored when Marcus Semien was unable to handle Logan Morrison's bouncer to shortstop. Smith's one-out RBI double in the second made it 3-0.
The A's got a run back in the fifth on Billy Butler's two-out run scoring base hit, but Seattle pushed across two more runs in the home half and another in the sixth. With runners on first and second and one away, Cruz rolled one to third base, but Brett Lawrie threw the ball into right field, allowing Smith and Cano to score.
Cano's RBI single in the sixth made it 6-1.
Canha's eighth-inning liner over the wall in left cut the deficit to 6-2.
Seattle added an insurance run in the bottom portion of the frame when Justin Ruggiano scored on a Fernando Abad wild pitch.
