A's, Mariners get back to work at Safeco Field

May 9, 2015 - 1:17 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners tangle in the second leg of a three-game series Saturday at Safeco Field as each team looks to make up some ground in the AL West.

Oakland will send Jesse Hahn to mound for the start, while Seattle will counter with J.A. Happ.

Hahn, a 25-year-old righty who came over from the Padres in the offseason via trade, will be looking to even his record with a win. He currently sits at 1-2 with a 4.33 earned run average in five starts for his new club.

Hahn lost his season debut against Texas, and picked up his first victory with an April 18 shutout of Kansas City. In his last start, Hahn went five innings and gave up 10 hits and six earned runs against Minnesota on Monday. He was tagged with the loss.

In his five starts this season, Hahn has only lasted past 5 2/3 innings once - his first appearance. The six runs he surrendered last time out raised his ERA from 2.86 to its current mark at 4.33.

Happ heads to the hill sporting a 2-1 record with a 3.51 ERA this season. He's punched out 24 batters and has walked only six in his five starts. Happ wasn't very effective against Houston in his last outing on Sunday. The lefty allowed seven hits and six runs in six innings before being pulled. He was hit with a no-decision, but the Mariners lost the contest, 7-6.

In five career games and three starts against Oakland, Happ is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 20 strikeouts compared to nine walks. When going up against Happ, the Athletics are batting just .209.

The two sides needed extra innings to settle their differences Friday night, and it was Logan Morrison who came to the rescue for Seattle in the bottom half of the 11th inning when he clobbered a walk-off home run to center field. The Mariners took the contest, 4-3.

Oakland starter Sonny Gray was seeking to maintain his unblemished record, and he was off to a hot start. Gray lasted six innings and gave up six hits with one run, adding nine strikeouts to his resume. Seattle starter Taijuan Walker pitched five innings and surrendered three runs.

Nelson Cruz, who leads the majors in home runs (14), total bases (86) and slugging percentage (.748), went 2-for-4 at the plate Friday with a walk. Morrison drove in two runs in the contest.

The A's led 3-1 in the fifth inning after Josh Reddick belted his fifth homer of the year. But Seattle came storming back to knot the score at 3-3 in the seventh.

"I've said this before, I love my guys," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "We've had some ups and downs, but I think, in the end, the talent will come to the top."

The Mariners own the series lead this season over Oakland, 3-1.
