Ozuna, Stanton help Marlins past Cubs
Jun 3, 2015 - 3:08 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcell Ozuna gave the Miami Marlins the lead for good with a double in the fifth as they defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the second of a three-game set at Marlins Park.Brad Hand was serviceable once again for Miami, tossing six innings of two-run ball. Hand (1-1) threw five scoreless frames in his first start of the season last time out at Pittsburgh.
"You gotta look at Brad Hand, setting the tone the way he did," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "He set the tone right away."
Giancarlo Stanton homered and Adeiny Hechavarria also knocked in a run for Miami, which had lost two straight.
Kyle Hendricks (1-2) took the loss for the Cubs after he went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
Anthony Rizzo and Junior Lake each had an RBI in the loss.
Ozuna singled to begin the second and scored on Hechavarria's two-out ground- rule double to right.
Chicago, which had its two-game winning streak halted, then tied the game and took the lead with a pair of two-out doubles in the third. Rizzo drove Dexter Fowler in with a two-base hit to right and Lake followed with one of his own to make it a 2-1 game.
The Marlins nearly squandered an opportunity to score some runs in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Hendricks struck out Stanton and got Justin Bour to pop out to shortstop. Ozuna then pounced on the first pitch he saw and sent it into the right-center gap for a bases-clearing double and a 4-2 lead.
"Huge (win)," Jennings said. "Five runs tonight all with two outs. I think that speaks to our approach tonight."
Stanton crushed a high fastball from Zac Rosscup over the wall in right to extend the margin to 5-2 in the seventh.
A.J. Ramos came on in the ninth and allowed a single to Starlin Castro before a walk to Addison Russell. Matt Szczur went down swinging for the first out prior to Russell making a rookie mistake on the basepaths.
Chris Coghlan poked a single out to right where Stanton fired to second to get Russell, who took a hard turn and was nabbed attempting to dive back to the bag. Ramos secured his fifth save of the season with a strikeout of Miguel Montero to end the game.
