Mets come back to beat Braves
Jun 14, 2015 - 10:53 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Lagares' three-run homer in the sixth helped the New York Mets overcome a five-run deficit and give them a 10-8 win over the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game set.Dillon Gee returned from the bereavement list and put the Mets in an early hole, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
New York reeled off nine runs from the third to the sixth, however, to pick up its starter.
Darrell Ceciliani started the comeback with his first career homer, then Dilson Herrera drove one out of the park to cut the Mets' deficit to 8-5 after four innings.
Travis d'Arnaud went deep in the fifth, driving in Lucas Duda, and Lagares put New York in front with his third homer of the season after Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Granderson opened the sixth with singles.
Herrera made a spectacular play to end the eighth as Mets closer Jeurys Familia was called in from the bullpen. Cameron Maybin singled with two outs, then Freddie Freeman ripped the first pitch he saw to Herrera, who made a diving stab and flipped the ball from his glove to Wilmer Flores covering second.
Familia pitched around a one-out single in the ninth for his 19th save of the season. Sean Gilmartin (1-0) picked up the win for two scoreless innings of relief.
New York's bullpen allowed three hits after Gee's forgettable outing.
"You gotta play nine," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "You gotta go out and compete... The energy on the bench was great."
Luis Avilan (2-2) took the loss after serving up Lagares' homer.
The Braves opened the scoring in the first when Freeman knocked in Jace Peterson with a single to right.
The Mets responded in the home half with singles from Granderson and Lagares putting runners at the corners. Granderson hustled home on a passed ball by Christian Bethancourt to tie the game.
Atlanta had a pair of runners on in the second as Peterson cracked his second homer of the season to put the visitors up 4-1.
"I thought we were swinging the bats pretty well as a team," Peterson said.
Kelly Johnson made it 5-1 with his RBI single in the third, but the Mets plated two in the home third on Flores' single to right.
The Braves took an 8-3 lead in the fourth. Nick Markakis stroked a ground-rule double to right that scored Peterson and Juan Uribe and Johnson followed with RBI singles.
Game Notes
Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz allowed six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings ... Ruben Tejada was activated from the paternity list prior to the game and started at third base, going 1-for-4 in his return ...
