Heyward powers Cards over Fish; Stanton clubs No. 27
Jun 25, 2015 - 3:31 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kolten Wong smacked a two-run homer in the third inning and Jason Heyward added a three-run shot in the seventh, as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Miami Marlins 6-1, despite another long ball from the powerful Giancarlo Stanton. The Marlins right fielder, who went 3-for-4, hit a 454-foot blast in the second inning for his major league-leading 27th homer of the season. He has 12 homers in June, tying his own club record (May 2012) and Dan Uggla's (May 2008) for most in any month.
Jaime Garcia (3-3) yielded five hits and one run and had four strikeouts over seven innings for the NL Central Division leaders.
"He gave up a couple of hard-hit balls, but he limited the damage and you could see by the way he got ground balls, the way his pitches were moving today," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "He's been doing a real nice job taking advantage of every start."
Heyward homered for a third straight contest and the Cardinals won for the fourth time in five games.
Mat Latos (2-5) surrendered only three hits, but gave up five runs in seven innings, as the Marlins lost for the sixth time in seven contests.
Stanton, who smacked a mammoth homer in Tuesday night's series-opening 4-3 loss, got hold of a first-pitch fastball and sent a rocket over the wall in center to start the second.
Wong homered to right with Randal Grichuk aboard. Jhonny Peralta singled to start the seventh and Mark Reynolds walked ahead of Heyward's crush of a 1-0 offering over the wall in right field for a 5-1 margin.
"We've been jamming Heyward pretty good all day, and then all of a sudden we go away, made a mistake with a ball out over the plate," Latos said. "I pitched pretty good, started the game off hitting my spots, but I made a mistake and 'boom.' It's the way my season has gone."
Garcia retired 11 straight batters until Stanton singled to begin the seventh. J.T. Realmuto singled with one out, but Garcia retired the next two batters.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the eighth courtesy of Matt Carpenter's RBI base hit, which scored Garcia. He singled to begin the inning, but came out of the game after cramping upon crossing the plate.
Game Notes
Stanton has an 11-game home hitting streak, during which time he's batting .447 (17-of-38) with seven homers and 16 RBI ...
