Raburn's blast lifts Tigers over Giants

Jun 18, 2008 - 6:27 AM By Ryan McCrary PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Pinch hitter Ryan Raburn's home run in the eighth inning snapped a tie and helped the Detroit Tigers claim a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

Hitting for starter Kenny Rogers (5-4), Raburn stroked his second homer of the season - a leadoff shot - off Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez (6-4) to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

"That one, that's about as good as I can go," Raburn said of his 420-foot homer. "I wish I could hit one a little better. I knew I got it, I just didn't know really how far it would go."

Edgar Renteria, who recorded his 2,000th career hit during the contest, scored on a fielder's choice by Carlos Guillen later in the frame to double the advantage.

"When you get 2,000 of them, you've hit a lot of big ones," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "Edgar's a professional hitter."

Rogers allowed just one run and five hits in seven innings, walking one while striking out two in snapping a streak of four straight no-decisions.

"I knew Sanchez was pitching great, with a great breaking ball and a great arm," Rogers said. "I knew I wasn't going out for the eighth, but Ryan didn't leave a whole lot of doubt on that ball. I want to win as much as anybody.

"I know they're trying harder to get me runs, sometimes that's not a good thing."

Sanchez, who had won each of his previous four starts, yielded three runs and six hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts and three walks.

"(Sanchez) threw a great ballgame," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "We are just having a tough time getting some runs on the board. It was pretty impressive ... his outing going into the eighth."

Detroit added two runs in the ninth against Vinnie Chulk. Marcus Thames led off the frame with his 13th home run of the season - a 465-foot blast to center field - and pinch hitter Jeff Larish added an RBI single later in the inning to cap the scoring.

Thames has homered in five straight games, tying the franchise record last reached by Willie Horton in 1969. The 31-year-old's last eight hits have all been home runs.

"That's awesome, especially when we win the game," Thames said. "Willie's been in my corner since I got to Detroit. It means a lot to be mentioned with him. He's been influential on me."

"I was kidding with Marcus the last two days that he hit one for everybody else, or two for some guys and I said, 'Man, you have just put an elephant on your back,'" Rogers said. "I said, 'Man if you don't hit one for me I know you don't love me.'"

San Francisco, which has lost 12 of its last 16 games at home, loaded the bases with none out in the ninth against Todd Jones. However, the veteran closer got rookie John Bowker to fly out before striking out Emmanuel Burriss and inducing a grounder to shortstop by Jose Castillo.

Bengie Molina drove in the Giants' only run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
