Weeks, Hart spark Brewers' 5-run ninth
Jun 20, 2010 - 11:29 PMVideo
Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart hit two-run doubles in a five-run ninth, and the Brewers averted a series sweep by rallying for a 6-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
"We showed some life in the last inning the night before and I think that carried over to today," said Hart, who had six RBIs in the series, including a three-run, ninth-inning homer in Saturday's 8-7 loss to the Rockies.
In both games, the Brewers got to Rockies reliever Manuel Corpas (1-4). He gave up Hart's NL-leading 18th homer on Saturday and allowed five runs on three hits while facing five batters without retiring any of them in taking the loss on Sunday.
"Simply put, the pitches that he needs to make and execute the pitch, he hasn't done it the last couple of days," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said. "He threw a couple of bad pitches and we paid to the tune of five runs in the ninth inning."
Trevor Hoffman (2-4) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the win.
Starters Randy Wolf of the Brewers and Aaron Cook each pitched well and left with nearly identical lines - one run and three hits in seven innings, with four walks. Cook struck out five, Wolf fanned two.
"I was able to get out of some jams and keep it close," Wolf said. "We broke out with five runs in the ninth and that was big for us. That gave us some breathing room, and the game wasn't so tight."
George Kottaras doubled to start the Milwaukee ninth, and Alcides Escobar reached when Corpas fielded his sacrifice and threw late to third. Pinch-hitter Joe Inglett's walk set up successive doubles by Weeks and Hart, which chased Corpas.
"The problem was location," Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta said of Corpas. "He gave up the hit to Kottaras on a pitch he threw where he didn't want it, and then threw the bunt play away. He tried to come in on Weeks and left the pitch out over the plate and you saw what happened."
Hart said Corpas' control problems cost him.
"He was a little wild, walked a guy," Hart said. "He got behind a few guys and of course, he had to come to Rickie with the bases loaded and Rickie put a good swing on the ball. When I got up, I was looking for a slider and I swung at the first one I saw."
Prince Fielder greeted Juan Rincon with an RBI double to finish the burst, which gave the Brewers' just their second win in the past 13 games at Coors Field and snapped a five-game losing streak at Colorado.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Rockies, who were denied in a bid to go a season-high five games over .500.
Brad Hawpe homered for the Rockies in the second. The Brewers tied it in the third when Cook walked Wolf and leadoff man Rickie Weeks and Hart singled.
NOTES: RHP Todd Coffey (thumb) was reinstated from the disabled list Sunday, and the Brewers made room for him on the roster by outrighting RHP Chris Smith to Triple-A Nashville. ... Rockies RHP Huston Street rejoined the club after completing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Manager Jim Tracy said a decision on when to activate him from the disabled list could be made Tuesday, but that in any case Street would be used on a spot basis out of the bullpen rather than return immediately to the closer role.
