Diamondbacks-Brewers Preview

Aug 11, 2010 - 5:31 AM By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Arizona (44-69) at Milwaukee (53-60), 8:10 p.m. EDT

When his team acquired Daniel Hudson less than two weeks ago, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said the right-hander looked like he could be "a pretty darn good starter."

Hudson will try to keep living up to his manager's billing by earning his third win in as many starts with the Diamondbacks as they visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.

Arizona (45-69) got Hudson (2-0, 1.15 ERA) and pitching prospect David Holmberg from the Chicago White Sox in a deal for starter Edwin Jackson on July 30. Hudson, the White Sox's minor league pitcher of the year last season, was 1-1 with a 6.32 ERA in three starts for Chicago in 2010.

He's had a much better time in the NL. In each of his two starts, Hudson has allowed one run and three hits while pitching into the eighth inning. He's totaled three walks with Arizona after issuing 11 in three outings for the White Sox.

"(Hudson is) fearless out there," first baseman Adam LaRoche said. "He's not going to show a lot of emotion, but he's not backing down from anybody. To play behind that, a guy that's pounding the zone and getting balls put in play in quick innings, is nice."

Hudson next tries to deliver the Diamondbacks' sixth victory in seven games and help add to their three-game road win streak, its longest since a five-game run Aug. 2-6, 2009.

After batting .339 and scoring 47 runs during a 5-1 stretch, the Brewers (53-61) have hit .212 and plated five runs in the two games against Arizona - both with All-Stars Ryan Braun (wrist) and Corey Hart (back) out of the lineup.

It's unclear if either will start Wednesday, though Braun entered as a pinch runner in Tuesday's 2-1 loss and Hart was used as a pinch hitter for the second straight game.

"You never know how your body is going to respond or what's going to happen," Braun told the team's official website. "I could be in there tomorrow, or it could be a month."

Without two of its top hitters Tuesday, Milwaukee was limited to four singles, a double and Alcides Escobar's third home run. Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, batting .366 in his last 11 games, hit the go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning.

The Brewers will try to bounce back behind Dave Bush (5-9, 4.48), who is 1-3 with a 5.67 ERA in his last five starts. The right-hander gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings Friday against Houston but did not get a decision in a 6-5 win.

Bush is 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA in four home starts since the beginning of July and 5-1 with a 3.65 ERA in seven matchups with Arizona. He's 2-0 with a 3.15 ERA in three games against the Diamondbacks at Miller Park.
