McGehee's RBI single in 10th lifts Brewers

Aug 15, 2010 - 4:27 AM DENVER(AP) -- After making one mistake after another, the Milwaukee Brewers got it right at the end.

Casey McGehee hit an RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Brewers overcame three errors and three runners thrown out on the basepaths to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 Saturday night.

Ryan Braun led off the 10th with an opposite-field double off Huston Street (2-4) and Prince Fielder was then intentionally walked. McGehee then lined his second single of the night into center to score Braun.

"We were a little bit more aggressive than I would have liked on the bases," Brewers manager Ken Macha said. "But when it was all said and done, we had one more (run) than they did."

John Axford (7-1) pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who was thrown out at home and also had a throwing error, came back to make a key play in the ninth. He threw out Troy Tulowitzki at third base when the Rockies shortstop tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt.

"You definitely want to redeem yourself after that and make a big play and help your team out," Lucroy said. "After that error, we fought back and overcame it."

The Rockies did take advantage of the Brewers' mistakes, but not enough to close the deal.

"It was a tough game," said Todd Helton, who drove in two runs for the Rockies with a homer and a sacrifice fly. "We should have won. They did swing the bats well and sometimes you just have to tip your cap. But it's getting a little late in the season to be tipping your cap. We've got to win some games."

Colorado manager Jim Tracy noted the closeness of the game even though the Brewers outhit the Rockies 16-6.

"We didn't have a whole lot of opportunities to make something happen. We were a hit shy tonight," Tracy said.

Eric Young Jr., recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier in the day after left-hander Jeff Francis went on the disabled list with a sore pitching shoulder, used his speed on the basepaths to take advantage of two Milwaukee errors in the fifth inning.

He reached when third baseman McGehee bobbled his grounder and failed to get the throw to first in time. Young then stole second and went to third when Lucroy's throw went into center field. That set up a go-ahead run for the Rockies - Todd Helton drove him home with a sacrifice fly.

But the game was tied for the second time in the top of the sixth when pinch-hitter Joe Inglett, batting for starting pitcher Chris Narveson, hit a run-scoring double off Randy Flores, who had just come on in relief of starter Esmil Rogers.

Lucroy, trying to score from first, was thrown out at the plate by Carlos Gonzalez to end the sixth inning.

It was the first of two assists for the Rockies left fielder.

Gonzalez also cut down Rickie Weeks at third base, with help from Tulowitzki, the shortstop, on the relay, when Milwaukee's fleet leadoff man tried to stretch a double into a triple.

Rogers, a rookie, went 5 2-3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits but did not factor in the decision in his first career start at Coors Field.

Down 3-0, the Rockies tied it when Helton ignited a three-run fourth inning with a leadoff home run off Narveson, his fourth of the season and first of the year at Coors Field. Ryan Spilborghs hit an RBI single and took third when Ian Stewart singled before scoring the tying run on Chris Iannetta's fielder's choice.

Milwaukee strung together three consecutive two-out, RBI singles in the second off Rogers, starting with pitcher Narveson's base hit up the middle to take the early lead.

NOTES: Street picked off Craig Counsell at first base after he had a pinch-hit single to lead off the ninth. He was the third Brewers runner nabbed on the basepaths. ... The last time Helton hit a home run at Coors Field was Sept. 30, also against Milwaukee. ... McGehee extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the second inning. ... Narveson went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) in his second consecutive no decision. ... Milwaukee reliever Mike McClendon pitched three hitless innings in his major league debut. ... The Rockies fell to 5-6 in extra-inning games.
