Hellickson tries to get Rays off schneid in finale with Halos

Apr 6, 2011 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - Heralded prospect Jeremy Hellickson hopes to get his Tampa Bay Rays off the schneid today when they finish off a two-game series at Tropicana Field against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Angels extended the Rays' season-opening skid to four games in Tuesday's opener, getting two runs batted in apiece from Torii Hunter and Alberto Callaspo in a 5-3 win.

Hank Conger added a solo homer for the Angels, who snapped a three-game slide.

Jered Weaver (2-0) worked 6 2/3 effective innings, giving up only one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out six, to earn the win.

B.J. Upton hit a two-run homer, while Sean Rodriguez had a solo shot for Tampa Bay, which was swept in a three-game series by Baltimore to begin the season.

Jeff Niemann (0-1) was tagged for five runs on nine hits with one walk in six- plus innings. The right-hander, who struck out four, went 12-8 with a 4.39 earned run average in 30 games - 29 starts - last season.

Hellickson, who is two days shy of his 24th birthday, reached the majors with Tampa Bay late last season and made 10 appearances - four starts - with a pristine 4-0 record and a 3.47 earned run average.

He allowed just 32 hits and struck out 33 batters in 36 1/3 innings, allowing an opposition batting average of .232.

In one relief outing against the Angels on Sept. 19 at home, he gave up a solo home run and struck out a batter in two innings of work.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, counters with veteran righty Dan Haren, who'll start for the 10th time in his career against the Rays.

Haren did not get a decision in his debut in Kansas City last week, despite a solid effort that saw him surrender six hits and a run - with six strikeouts and no walks - in seven innings.

He's 5-2 against Tampa Bay with a complete game and a 2.74 ERA in 62 1/3 innings. In those nine starts, he's allowed 45 hits and 25 runs while striking out 62 batters and walking only eight.

Collectively, the Rays have hit .196 against him.

Tampa Bay was 5-4 against the Angels last season.
