Rockies spoil Pirates' home-opener

Apr 7, 2011 - 11:24 PM Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homer and knocked in three runs to back a strong 7 1/3 innings from Esmil Rogers, as the Colorado Rockies spoiled Pittsburgh's 2011 home-opener with a 7-1 win to start a four-game series at PNC Park.

Carlos Gonzalez drove in two and scored a pair for Colorado, which has won four straight since dropping its first game of the year. Ryan Spilborghs added an RBI single.

Rogers (1-0) earned the victory after allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

"I felt great with all of my pitches," said Rogers, 25, who went 2-3 with a 6.13 earned run average in 28 appearances -- eight starts -- last season.

Andrew McCutchen knocked in the lone run for the Pirates, who have lost two of their last three. Pittsburgh was limited to four hits for the game.

"I feel like we owe it to the fans to win the first day, but unfortunately we weren't able to," said McCutchen.

Paul Maholm (0-1) surrendered five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 5 2/3 frames to take the loss.

Colorado opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the first. Dexter Fowler led off with a base hit and scored when Pirates second baseman Neil Walker fielded a grounder off the bat of Gonzalez, but his throw to second sailed into the outfield allowing Fowler to score and Gonzalez to reach third. Tulowitzki followed with a sac fly.

McCutchen's run-scoring groundout in the home half plated Jose Tabata, who singled and reached third on base hit to make it a 2-1 game.

Tulowitzki began the fourth with a homer into the left-field seats and the Rockies put two more up in the sixth. Gonzalez singled in Spilborghs, who started the inning with a double and Tulowitzki followed with an RBI two- bagger, but was thrown out at third.

An RBI single by Spilborghs and sac fly by Gonzalez in the seventh put Colorado in front 7-1.
