Haren twirls gem, as Angels blank Tribe

Apr 13, 2011 - 5:12 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Dan Haren only allowed one hit while throwing a shutout as the Angels topped the Indians, 2-0, in game two of a three-game set at Angels Stadium.

"I felt really good warming up in the pen," Haren said. "I was able to mix up my pitches and keep the ball down. I went at them all night."

Haren (3-0) threw 125 pitches in the outing while striking out eight and yielding only two walks. He pitched one day after his normal spot in the rotation thanks to a relief appearance in the Angels 14-inning win over Toronto on Sunday.

The Angels were assisted by a pair of solo homers, the first coming from Peter Bourjos in the third and the insurance run coming from Mark Trumbo, who hit his first career homer, in the seventh inning.

Fausto Carmona (0-2) took the loss for Cleveland by allowing both runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings. Shin-Soo Choo recorded the only Indians hit, a single in the fourth inning, as Cleveland saw an eight-game winning streak snapped.

"Well pitched ball game on both sides," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "Haren was on his game, (Carmona) did his job and was very good, unfortunately Haren was too good."

The Indians were the ones putting up the shutout in game-one of the series as Matt LaPorta hit a three-run shot and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo homer in Cleveland's 4-0 victory on Monday.

Haren sat down the first five batters he faced in this one until Orlando Cabrera reached on Alberto Callaspo's fielding error with two outs in the second. Haren's teammates quickly resolved the error as Cabrera was caught stealing to end the frame.

Jack Hannahan worked an two-out walk in the third to get on for the Indians, but was left stranded when Michael Brantley flied out to right.

Bourjos accounted for the go-ahead run by leading off the third with his first homer of the season. Carmona then sat the Angels' 1-2-3 hitters in order to end the inning.

"I don't think Dan could have pitched any better," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He made some terrific pitches to keep those guys down all night."

After Cabrera popped out to start the fourth, the Indians finally got to Haren with Choo's single to center. Haren responded by striking out Carlos Santana and getting Travis Hafner to ground out to short.

The Angels went up by the final margin when Trumbo roped his first homer, over the left field wall, with one-out in the seventh.

Game Notes

This was Haren's third-career shutout and 12th complete game...Bourjos finished 2-for-3 with a double...The Angles finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded five.
