Marlins send Johnson to hill in Cincinnati
Apr 30, 2011 - 2:47 PMVideo
A 27-year-old native of Minneapolis, Johnson has pitched at least six innings in each of his five starts in 2011 - allowing no more than four hits or two earned runs in any outing.
He scattered three hits and allowed a single run in an April 24 outing against Colorado, picking up a no-decision in a game Florida won, 6-3.
The Marlins are 4-1 in games he's pitched this season.
Johnson was 15-5 with a 3.23 earned run average in 33 starts in 2009, then went 11-6 in 28 starts last season with a league-best 2.30 ERA across 183 2/3 innings.
Lifetime against the Reds, Johnson is 2-1 with a 4.05 ERA in four games.
For Cincinnati, 27-year-old Dominican righty Edinson Volquez can stay perfect against the Marlins in his fifth career matchup. He's 4-0 against Florida and has allowed just 21 hits and five runs with 23 strikeouts in 26 innings - a 1.73 ERA.
The veteran of 75 big-league starts hasn't been so statistically successful this season, already allowing 20 runs on 26 hits in 28 1/3 innings.
He gave up six hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-0 loss at St. Louis on April 24. Volquez's last win came April 11 at San Diego, when he allowed three hits and two runs in six innings of a 3-2 triumph.
A 17-game winner in 2008, Volquez was limited by injury to just 21 starts and eight wins in 2009 and 2010, but started on Opening Day for the Reds this season.
The Marlins opened the series with a 7-6 win Friday, when John Buck belted a three-run homer and Hanley Ramirez knocked in two.
Javier Vazquez (2-2) earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while fanning three to give the Marlins their eighth win in their last 10 games.
Travis Wood (1-3) took the loss when he lasted only 3 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three to give Cincinnati its 10th loss in its last 15 games.
The Reds won five of seven over the Marlins last year, including a three-game home sweep from Aug. 13-15.
