Reds eye winning streak in finale with Fish

May 1, 2011 - 3:48 PM (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds try to string back-to-back wins together for the first time in nearly three weeks this afternoon when they play the rubber match of a three-game series against the Florida Marlins at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds pulled out a dramatic win on Saturday, as Edgar Renteria's pinch-hit, RBI single in the 10th lifted Cincinnati to a, 4-3, come-from-behind win.

Cincinnati scored three times in the eighth to tie the game and loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th inning. Florida, though, was in a position to escape the frame, as Ramon Hernandez grounded into a fielder's choice with five fielder's in the infield that saw a forceout at home. Paul Janish then popped out to first base for the second out.

Renteria, though, stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left off Michael Dunn (0-1) for the win.

Francisco Cordero (1-0) got the win for throwing two scoreless innings for the Reds, who dropped a 7-6 decision in the opener on Friday. Cincinnati hasn't won consecutive games since April 11-12.

"I know when I come in with a tie game my job is to go as many innings and give the guys a chance to win, it worked tonight," said Cordero.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision as Edinson Volquez was charged with one run on two hits with five walks and four strikeouts for Cincinnati. Josh Johnson gave up five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over seven frames for Florida, which came into the game having won four of five.

"These are the games where we have to execute better and we didn't do that today, we wasted a bunch of chances," said Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez.

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling for the Reds this afternoon will be right- hander Bronson Arroyo, who is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA. Arroyo picked up a win in his last trip to the hill on Monday in Milwaukee, as he allowed two runs (one earned) and six hits in 6 1/3 frames.

However, he is 0-2 lifetime against the Marlins with a 4.29 ERA in nine games (six starts).

The Marlins, meanwhile, will counter with righty RIcky Nolasco, who is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA. Nolasco did not get a decision on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings in his team's 5-4 win.

Nolasco has faced the Reds six times (five starts) and is 1-1 with a 5.58 ERA.
