Cards' Garcia falls short of perfection, shuts out Brewers
May 7, 2011 - 6:50 AMVideo
Garcia (4-0) retired the first 22 batters he faced, but Casey McGehee ended the perfect game with a one-out walk in the eighth. Yuniesky Betancourt then broke up Garcia's bid for a no-hitter by slapping a single to left. Corey Hart grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Garcia worked around a two-out double in the ninth to record his second shutout of the season. He struck out eight and walked one en route to his third career shutout.
"It's so hard not to think about [the perfect game]," Garcia said. "This is definitely one of the greatest days of my short career. It was very exciting."
Albert Pujols paced the offense with three runs batted in for the Cardinals, who have won three of four. Yadier Molina hit a solo homer.
Randy Wolf (3-3) gave up six runs on seven hits over five frames to suffer the loss for the Brewers, who have dropped a season-high seven straight games.
"My command was the worst it's been all year," Wolf said.
The Cardinals gave Garcia all the support he needed in the first inning. Ryan Theriot was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Colby Rasmus' single, moved to third when Pujols grounded into a double play and crossed the plate on Matt Holliday's double.
St. Louis added two runs in the third. Theriot led off with a single and scored on Rasmus' triple to left-center field. Pujols then hit a sac fly to center.
Molina sparked a three-run fourth with a solo homer to left. The Cardinals went on to load the bases with two outs, and Pujols stepped to the plate and hit a two-run single to center for a 6-0 margin.
Game Notes
The Brewers placed outfielder Nyjer Morgan on the 15-day disabled list due to a broken finger. Morgan is expected to miss two-to-four weeks of action after breaking his left middle finger during the Brewers' 2-1 loss to Atlanta on Thursday. Milwaukee recalled outfielder Brandon Boggs from Triple-A Nashville...Holliday extended his hitting streak to 12 games...It was the third career complete game for Garcia.
