Latos takes another crack at win No.1 in Colorado

May 15, 2011 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - Mat Latos takes another crack at his first win of the season this afternoon when the San Diego Padres wrap up a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Big things were expected from Latos this season after he won 14 games a year ago in his first full season in the majors. However, the right-hander has yet to get on track after opening the year on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.

Latos' latest setback came on Monday in Milwaukee, as the Brewers reached him for four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He is now winless in his last 11 starts dating back to last season.

"I really don't know what to say," Latos said. "There's no excuses for what happened."

Latos has faced the Rockies twice and is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA against them.

Colorado will counter with righty Jason Hammel, who is 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA. Hammel was charged with the loss on Tuesday against the New York Mets, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings. Hammel was also hit in the leg by a line drive in the loss.

Hammel is 3-1 lifetime against the Padres with a 4.88 ERA in 10 games, nine of which have been starts.

Colorado will be looking to rebound following a stunning loss on Saturday. Brad Hawpe capped off San Diego's big rally with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, as the Padres came back from a six-run deficit to beat the Rockies, 9-7.

The ex-Rockie Hawpe went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Padres, who bounced back from a 12-7 loss in the opener of this series on Friday. Eric Patterson also drove in two runs.

Aaron Harang lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. Mike Adams (2-0) tossed a scoreless eighth to pick up the win.

Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton each hit solo homers for the Rockies, who have lost three of four. Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki each knocked in two runs in defeat.

Jhoulys Chacin went six-plus frames in the start for Colorado, giving up five runs -- three earned -- on five hits. Huston Street (0-1) gave up the homer to Hawpe to take the loss.

"It's on us as a staff. We didn't make our pitches and execute down the stretch," Street said of the bullpen giving up the lead.

Colorado won 12 of its 18 matchups with the Padres last season.
