Indians trample Royals

May 17, 2011 - 5:08 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians made up for lost time by decimating the Kansas City Royals, 19-1, to start a brief two-game series.

Michael Brantley and Matt LaPorta both drove in four runs for the Indians, who saw two games postponed by rain this past weekend in Cleveland.

Travis Buck, who was called up Monday after the Tribe placed outfielder Grady Sizemore on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion, went 3-for-6 with an RBI and scored three times.

Travis Hafner and Orlando Cabrera also had three RBI apiece as Cleveland tallied its highest-scoring game since beating the Yankees 22-4 in New York on April 18, 2009.

Josh Tomlin (5-1) got the easy win, allowing one run on five hits in six innings.

Billy Butler knocked in the lone run for Kansas City, which has lost three straight.

Kyle Davies (1-6) left the game in the first inning with anterior shoulder soreness but was still charged with the loss, allowing two runs in just one- third of an inning. Vin Mazzaro turned in an ugly stat line for the Royals, giving up 14 runs on 11 hits in 2 1/3 innings.

"It was a tough night and a tough situation," Mazzaro said. "I just tried to do my best with it."

The game got out of hand with a 10-run top of the fourth that made it 13-0. The Indians scored nine of the runs with two outs, highlighted by Hafner's three-run double and Brantley's three-run homer.

"We swung the bats really well, but he was really put in a tough spot," Hafner said of the 14-run attack on Mazzaro. "He was scheduled to pitch tomorrow and with the starter (Davies) getting hurt, he was really put in a tough spot."

Butler's ground out scored Alex Gordon in the bottom half to put the Royals on the board, but it barely chipped into the enormous deficit.

The visitors poured on four more runs in the fifth, thanks to Buck's RBI single and LaPorta's double that scored two. Buck came home on Jack Hannahan's single to finish the rally.

Shelley Duncan hit a two-run double in the sixth and the Indians were held scoreless in the final three innings.

Davies walked three of the first four batters he faced before leaving with the injury. Nathan Adcock came in, struck out Hafner and served up a two-run single to Cabrera before Carlos Santana was called out in a run down.

The Indians added another run on Brantley's RBI single in the second as Cleveland collected five walks through the first three innings just before the big fourth.

Game Notes

Buck started the year with the Tribe, appearing in 10 games prior to his demotion on April 19...It was the most runs the Indians have scored against the Royals...The Indians improved to 10-9 on the road...The most runs given up by the Royals was 22 on April 12, 1994 against Boston.
