Fielder, Greinke power Brewers past Nationals
May 25, 2011 - 9:21 PM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Prince Fielder drove in four runs to support a solid outing from Zack Greinke, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Washington Nationals, 6-4, in the finale of a three-game set at Miller Park.Greinke (3-1) set season highs in strikeouts (10) and innings pitched (seven) while helping his own cause with a tiebreaking home run to lead off the fifth. The right-hander gave up five hits -- including a three-run homer to Michael Morse -- and one walk.
The Brewers swept this series and now have won six in a row overall. Milwaukee also extended its home winning streak to nine games, a Miller Park record.
Jason Marquis (5-2) absorbed the loss after allowing four runs, five hits and four walks in six frames for Washington, which suffered its season-high fifth straight loss.
"We need good hitting and good pitching to come together," said Washington manager Jim Riggleman. "We got down early again and that's tough."
Roger Bernadina reached on a fielding error by Milwaukee second baseman Rickie Weeks to begin the eighth and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Laynce Nix, trimming the Nationals' deficit to a run.
Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-out double in the bottom of the inning to score Jonathan Lucroy and put the Brewers up 6-4.
Kameron Loe recorded the final four outs for Milwaukee to notch the second save of his career.
For the third time in this series, the Brewers scored in the first inning. Corey Hart drew a one-out walk and Ryan Braun, who was ejected from Tuesday's 7-6 win, snapping his career-high 13-game hitting streak, grounded a single to left field. Fielder then lined a 2-1 pitch off the wall in right-center for a double, giving Milwaukee an early 2-0 lead.
Fielder added a sac fly in the third, but Washington pulled even in the next inning on Morse's third home run in as many games. Jayson Werth led off with a single and Nix stroked a ground-rule double. Morse followed with his fifth home run of the season, a blast to left-center.
"(Zack) had the one inning that got away from him. It happened quickly," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke.
After Greinke put Milwaukee ahead with his second career home run, a drive to the left field seats, Fielder extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI single off Nationals reliever Sean Burnett in the seventh.
