Bumgarner hopes to stay hot versus Rockies

Jun 4, 2011 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - Madison Bumgarner takes aim at his third straight winning decision this evening when the San Francisco Giants continue a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.

Bumgarner opened the year 0-6, but has won his last two decisions and on Monday defeated St. Louis, as he allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings to lower his earned run average to 3.66. It was the 21-year-old hurler's seventh straight quality start, a stretch that has seen him pitch to a 2.12 ERA.

Still, though, he said there was more to come.

"I don't feel I've gotten into a good rhythm yet," Bumgarner said.

Extending that winning streak could prove to be difficult for Bumgarner, as he is 0-2 lifetime against the Rockies with a 3.52 ERA in four starts. He did not get a decision against them earlier in the year, but had one of his better outings, surrendering one earned run in six innings of his team's 3-2 win.

San Francisco drew first blood in this series on Friday, as Cody Ross doubled in two runs and scored another in the fourth inning to provide enough offense behind Matt Cain in the Giants' 3-1 victory.

Cain (4-4) twirled seven innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out seven for San Francisco, which has won three in a row.

Juan Nicasio (1-1), in his second career start, gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings, though he did record two of Colorado's five hits.

The Rockies were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position, as they fell for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

"It's a rough spell that's lasted a lot longer than we would have liked," Rockies right fielder Seth Smith said.

Tonight, Colorado will rely on righty Jhoulys Chacin, who is 5-4 with a 3.33 ERA. Chacin lost his second straight start on Sunday against the Cardinals, as he allowed four runs and six hits in six innings.

Chacin has faced the Giants four times (three starts) and is 2-1 against them with a 2.14 ERA.

The Giants have already won six of their nine meetings with the Rockies this season.
