Porcello tries to stay hot as Tigers battle Rangers
Jun 7, 2011 - 3:01 PMVideo
Since opening the year with consecutive losing starts, Porcello has been virtually unbeatable, going 5-1, while allowing two runs or less in seven of his eight outings to lower his earned run average on the year to 3.79.
That was the case on Wednesday against Minnesota, as the 22-year-old right- hander beat the Twins, holding them to a pair of runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. That outing had followed up his lone miserable appearance over the impressive stretch, one that saw him surrender six runs in three innings to the Boston Red Sox.
Porcello lost his only other start to the Rangers, as he was hit hard for six runs in four innings back in April 2010.
Texas, meanwhile, will counter with a pitcher who has been equally as impressive of late in Matt Harrison. The left-hander hasn't pitched since May 28 when won his second straight start without allowing a run, scattering five hits over six scoreless innings to the Kansas City Royals.
Harrison, who is 5-4 on the year with a 3.26 ERA, is 1-2 lifetime against the Tigers with a 7.17 ERA in five games, three of which have been starts.
Detroit exploded offensively in Monday's opener, as Brennan Boesch went 5- for-5, homered twice and knocked in five runs to help the Tigers to a 13-7 rout. Andy Dirks and Alex Avila also hit home runs for Detroit, which won for the seventh time in eight games.
Max Scherzer (7-2) earned the win, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk through five innings.
Colby Lewis (5-6) took the loss in just 3 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and a walk to halt the Rangers' five-game winning streak.
"I felt fine. The ball just wasn't winding up where it should have been tonight," said Lewis.
The Tigers took two of three from the Rangers earlier in the year.
