White Sox go for sweep of Mariners in Chicago

Jun 8, 2011 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox try to continue their recent mastery of the Seattle Mariners this evening when they attempt to complete a three- game sweep at U.S. Cellular Field.

Chicago took two of three from the Mariners earlier in the year and is 13-2 against them since the start of last season. Seattle lost all seven games it played last season in the Windy City and has dropped 10 in a row there overall after losing the first two games of this set.

On Tuesday, Carlos Quentin had a two-run home run and Paul Konerko added a solo shot to lead Chicago to a 5-1 win.

Philip Humber (5-3) allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings on five hits and three walks while fanning five, as the White Sox were victorious for the sixth time in eight games.

Felix Hernandez (6-5) pitched 6 2/3 innings in defeat, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks. He also struck out five in the Mariners' third loss in four contests.

"He probably didn't have his best night but we'll take it. Every now and again you need to catch a break and sometimes that is a guy like that maybe not having his best night. So we'll take it and run with it," Konerko said about Hernandez.

Seattle, which hasn't won in Chicago since April 28, 2009, has struggled offensively of late, especially outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who was 0-for-4 in the loss and is hitting just .165 since May 19.

"We've got some of these veteran offensive players that need to be doing better," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "People we're counting on need to do better. It's a simple as that. We're damn near 2 1/2 months into the season, we've got guys that need to be doing better."

Chicago's run against the Mariners could continue tonight since right-hander Gavin Floyd has not allowed a run in 22 innings over his last three starts against the Mariners dating back to last season. He beat them with eight scoreless innings back on May 7 and is 3-4 lifetime against them with a 4.68 ERA in 12 games (10 starts).

Floyd beat the Boston Red Sox his last time out, as he allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings to run his record on the year to 6-5 to go along with a 3.84 ERA.

Seattle, though, will counter with left-hander Jason Vargas, who threw the first shutout of his career in his last start. Vargas limited the Tampa Bay Rays to just four hits on Friday, as he improved to 4-3, while lowering his ERA to 3.96.

Vargas has yet to record a decision in three games (two starts) against the White Sox, but has pitched to a 5.40 ERA.
