Sandoval goes hitless but Giants top Padres

Jul 16, 2011 - 7:00 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Pablo Sandoval couldn't extend his career- best 22-game hitting streak, but the Giants continued to thrive against the Padres.

Andres Torres had three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times in San Francisco's 6-1 win over San Diego in the continuation of a four-game series. Cody Ross homered for the NL West leaders, who have won four in a row and six of their last seven games.

Tim Lincecum (8-7) threw a sharp six innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven batters.

"He didn't pitch quite as efficient as he would have liked, but it's a good job," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's fair to say his command wasn't quite as sharp or had good stuff, but he found a way to give us six solid innings."

Sandoval, who went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly, received a standing ovation after he grounded out leading off the ninth inning. Sandoval fell four games shy of tying a San Francisco era record for longest hitting streak, which was set by Jack Clark in 1978.

Dustin Moseley (2-9) gave up seven hits and four runs over six innings to lose his third straight decision. His last win came June 3 against Houston.

The Padres, who had four hits, lost their season-high seventh straight game.

"With this group right here we have to keep fighting through it and hopefully they come together and start stringing some hits together as a group," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Consecutive singles from Torres and Mike Fontenot leading off the game led to Sandoval's sacrifice fly to left.

Ross homered to left leading off the second before the Padres got one back in the fourth thanks in part to wildness from Lincecum. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner walked Alberto Gonzalez, who went to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on Orlando Hudson's groundout. Lincecum escaped a jam with two runners on base later in the inning with Torres colliding with the wall in center to retire Kyle Phillips to end the inning.

The Giants expanded to a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Torres singled in Chris Stewart and later came home as part of a double-steal. Fontenot slid in hard at second, allowing Torres to score.

Torres doubled in Aaron Rowand in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch from Ernesto Frieri.

Game Notes

The Giants have won the last four meetings....San Francisco has posted a 24-13 record vs. NL West clubs this season. The Giants have lost only two series to NL West clubs in 2011 as they went 1-3 at Los Angeles during the first weekend and 0-2 vs. Colorado May 16-17...Prior to the game, the Giants placed outfielder Pat Burrell on the 15-day disabled list with a right mid foot strain. The team also purchased the contract of catcher Hector Sanchez from Triple-A Fresno and moved infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa (torn tendon in left wrist) to the 60-day DL. Sanchez made his major league debut by walking as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning...The Giants also hired former Nationals manager Jim Riggleman as a special assignment scout...Lincecum moved to 7-4 lifetime against the Padres...San Diego third baseman Chase Headley left the game after the top of the first inning with a strained right calf muscle...Despite going hitless, Sandoval is now batting .400 (16-for-40) over his last 10 games against San Diego...Torres is hitting .345 (10-for-29) over his last eight games.
