Trumbo, Weaver lead Angels over Indians

Jul 27, 2011 - 5:19 AM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Mark Trumbo hit a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to account for the winning runs, leading the Angels to a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the middle tilt of a three-game series at Progressive Field.

Bobby Abreu and Howie Kendrick added hits and scored on Trumbo's double for the Angels, who have won five of their last seven games.

Jered Weaver (14-4) was dominant again, giving up one run on five hits over seven innings. He fanned five, walked two and won his eighth straight decision.

Jordan Walden overcame a second straight rough outing, getting out of a bases- loaded situation in the ninth to record his 24th save of the season.

Matt LaPorta clubbed a solo home run and rookie Jason Kipnis added a double for the Indians, who have lost five of their last six contests.

Josh Tomlin (11-5) pitched very well in defeat, giving up two runs on four hits over eight innings. He struck out three and walked one.

"I just tried to go out there and throw as many zeros as I can and give our team a chance to win," Tomlin said. "I made more mistakes than Weaver did tonight."

Los Angeles broke the scoreless tie in the seventh, plating two runs. Abreu singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a groundout by Vernon Wells. Kendrick was intentionally walked to put two men on for the Angels. Trumbo followed with a two-run double to right to give the Angels a 2-0 advantage. Tomlin got Peter Bourjos to fly out to center to end the inning and limit the damage.

LaPorta got one back for the Indians in the bottom of the seventh, blasting a changeup from Weaver into the left field seats for his ninth home run of the season.

Cleveland had a significant chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Travis Hafner and Carlos Santana ripped singles to begin the inning and Lonnie Chisinhall reached on a botched sacrifice bunt play. Walden got LaPaorta to ground into a 4-2-3 double play and fanned Kipnis to end the game.

"I think it speaks to his make-up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of his rookie closer. "He got into as bad of a jam as you can get into and pitched his way out of it."

Cleveland threatened in the third when Kipnis led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Travis Buck. Ezequiel Carrera followed with a walk to give the Tribe runners on the corners with one out. Weaver battled back however, getting Michael Brantley to pop out and Asdrubal Cabrera to ground out to end the inning.

The Indians also threatened in the fourth, putting runners on the corners with two down, but Weaver struck out Kipnis to keep the game scoreless.

The Angels lead the season series with the Indians by a 5-3 count...Cleveland is 9-10 against the American League West, while the Angels are 16-14 against the American League Central this season...The Indians are 28-21 at home this season.
