Miller takes the ball for BoSox in Chicago

Jul 31, 2011 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Having split the first two contests of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field, the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox will decide things this afternoon.

Boston will hand the ball to 26-year-old Andrew Miller for today?s affair. The lefty is an impressive 4-1 thus far, but his 5.45 ERA could certainly stand some improvement. He allowed a season-high nine hits to the Royals on Tuesday, surrendering seven runs in that affair. In his last four starts, the Red Sox hurler has issued 17 walks while striking out a mere four batters.

Miller is 0-1 with a 9.58 ERA in two career starts against the White Sox.

Mark Buehrle, meanwhile, is enjoying another successful season as Chicago?s top hurler, as he is 8-5 with a 3.22 ERA. He was certainly sharp on Monday, allowing zero earned runs against the Tigers, and he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 15 starts.

Buehrle has faced the Red Sox 15 times in his career and is 6-6 with a 4.57 ERA.

Yesterday, Jon Lester dominated through eight innings and was backed by a potent offense that piled up 15 hits to give Boston a 10-2 victory.

Lester (11-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning eight, snapping Boston's brief, two-game losing streak.

Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis smacked home runs, and Marco Scutaro added three RBI as the Red Sox improved to 19-6 in the month of July.

Philip Humber (8-7) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings for the loss.

Paul Konerko and Gordon Beckham both went deep for the White Sox, winners in five of their last six entering the contest.

"There's not too many games where they're going to be held down," Lester said of Boston's offense. "It's fun to watch. We get kind of spoiled pitching behind these guys. They swung the bats great, played good defense it was a good game all around for us."

The Red Sox continue to lead the Yankees by two games in the AL East, while the White Sox are three games back in the AL Central.
