Bartlett, Stauffer key San Diego's blanking of Dodgers
Aug 4, 2011 - 6:46 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Jason Bartlett homered to highlight a three- hit performance, helping the Padres avoid a sweep with a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. While San Diego plated only three runs, Tim Stauffer and the rest of the Padres pitching staff ensured a victory by holding Los Angeles scoreless.
Stauffer (7-8) gave up six hits and one walk in 6 1/3 innings, while Josh Spence got San Diego out of a bases-loaded situation in the seventh. Chad Qualls and Heath Bell finished the game to secure San Diego's third win in nine games.
Dodgers starter Ted Lilly (7-11) took the loss despite allowing one run, four hits and a walk in six innings.
"Pretty disappointing for me to have an opportunity to help us win a game, and you kind of feel like you ... let it go," Lilly said.
Lilly also struck out seven and held San Diego off the scoreboard for the first five innings, but gave up Bartlett's homer in the sixth. His 0-1 fastball was nearly letter-high, and Bartlett hammered it to left-center field.
"The inning before he started throwing more fastballs and I was just going to pick one out and got one to hit," said Bartlett.
The Dodgers had a great chance to get that run back -- and more -- in the seventh.
Dioner Navarro began the inning with a single and Tony Gwynn Jr. reached on a bunt before Jamey Carroll sacrificed them into scoring position. Stauffer was then pulled in favor of Spence, who intentionally walked pinch-hitter Casey Blake before getting San Diego out of the jam.
Spence induced a lineout back to the mound from Dee Gordon, then froze Aaron Miles with a 3-2 breaking ball that started well outside before diving back over the plate. Miles started to go to first, thinking he had walk, but threw his bat in frustration at the called third strike.
It was pivotal point in the contest. Aaron Cunningham legged out a triple to lead off the bottom half and scored when Gordon committed a fielding error two batters later.
Bartlett scored the Padres' third run in the eighth, when he singled, stole second and crossed home on Jesus Guzman's base hit.
Bell set the Dodgers down in order in the ninth for his 31st save.
