Angels, Mariners resume set at the Big A

Aug 6, 2011 - 3:38 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will try to keep pace with the Texas Rangers in the American League West when they take on the Seattle Mariners tonight in the second matchup of a three-game set at Angel Stadium.

Blake Beavan will make his sixth start of his career this evening. So far the young hurler has been mediocre at best, but he is coming off his second victory.

In a matchup against Oakland, the right-hander held the Athletics to just three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. It was the second win for Beavan and snapped the youngster's three-game winless streak.

One of Beavan's starts came against the Angels, and while he did not record a win, Seattle's hurler did hold Anaheim to just two runs in just over six innings of action.

The Angels will also hand the ball to a rookie, as Tyler Chatwood will take the hill tonight. Chatwood, however, has more experience when compared to Beavan because this will be his 21st start.

Like most rookies, Chatwood has been inconsistent and comes into this game with just one win in his last five outings. The last time he was in action, the young hurler was punished by Detroit, as the Tigers scored six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Chatwood has never squared off against Seattle in his brief career, but this will be his 12th start at Angel Stadium. However, at home, the right-hander has struggled posting a 2-5 ledger with a 3.96 earned run average.

Yesterday, Vernon Wells singled in Torii Hunter in the 10th inning, boosting the Angels to a 1-0 win over the Mariners.

Hunter singled to left off Dan Cortes (0-1) to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Wells dropped a single into left field to give Los Angeles its seventh victory in 10 games.

They've also beaten the Mariners in 17 of the last 19 encounters at Angel Stadium. The Angels remained a game behind Texas for first place in the AL West.

Jered Weaver scattered seven hits and had eight strikeouts over nine innings. Jordan Walden (3-3) retired the side in order in the top of the 10th.

Ichiro Suzuki had a pair of hits for the Mariners, who had a three-game winning streak broken. They've lost five straight times to the Angels.
