Angels, Mariners wrap up set in Anaheim

Aug 7, 2011 - 2:57 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will try to grab a series win over the Seattle Mariners when the two squads clash in the finale of this three-game series today at Angel Stadium.

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez has endured some struggles defending his trophy. However, like any great pitcher, the young Mariners hurler has persevered through the ups and downs, and rolls into this matchup with a modest two-game winning streak.

The last time Hernandez was on the hill he was simply too much for Oakland, as he held the Athletics to just two runs in just over six innings of work. Hernandez scattered five hits and struck out nine batters.

Playing in the same division as Anaheim, the hard-throwing right-hander is no stranger from the team from Los Angeles. In 22 career starts against the Halos, Hernandez is just 4-8 with a 4.11 earned run average. Earlier this year Seattle's ace held Anaheim to just two runs in seven innings, but despite the strong showing he did not factor in the decision.

The Angels will turn to Ervin Santana, who is one of the hottest pitchers in the American League. After tossing a no-hitter against Cleveland, the veteran right-hander responded with a complete game win over Minnesota.

In that victory, Santana allowed just one run on eight hits and struck out seven batters. It was the third straight win for Santana, and the fourth in his last six starts.

Santana has spent his entire career in Anaheim, so he has squared off against Seattle 22 times. In those matchups he is 9-5 with a 3.83 earned run average. Earlier this season the right-hander allowed three runs against the Mariners in seven innings of work, but did not factor in the decision.

Yesterday, Blake Beavan threw eight innings of one-run ball to defeat fellow rookie Tyler Chatwood, as the Mariners earned a rare road win against the Angels with a 5-1 triumph.

Beavan (3-2) gave up one run on eight hits and did not issue a walk in helping Seattle snap an eight-game losing streak at Angel Stadium. It was the 22-year- old righty's sixth straight quality start to begin his career.

Adam Kennedy hit a two-run double in the first inning to jump-start the win, and Trayvon Robinson posted his first career home run.

Chatwood (6-8) was charged with five runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings for Los Angeles, which had won three of four coming in.
