Rockies, Reds begin set in Cincy

Aug 8, 2011 - 2:52 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of third-place National League teams open a four- game series tonight in Cincinnati when the host Reds meet the visiting Colorado Rockies at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds are third in the NL Central, 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, after salvaging the finale of a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Ryan Hanigan capped a back-and-forth affair with an eighth-inning RBI single, as Cincinnati earned an 8-7 victory.

Todd Frazier had a game-tying double earlier in the eighth and finished 2- for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Edgar Renteria added a two-run homer and Drew Stubbs had a solo shot.

Nick Masset (2-5) recorded the final out of the seventh to earn the win, while Francisco Cordero threw a perfect ninth to notch his 20th save of the season.

Champions of the Central in 2010, the Reds are 10 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the race for the NL wild card playoff berth.

On Sunday in Denver, Jayson Werth singled in Danny Espinosa in the eighth to lead Washington past Colorado, 3-2, in the finale of a four-game set at Coors Field. Carlos Gonzalez and Ty Wigginton each drove in a run for the Rockies, who have dropped six of their last eight games.

Matt Belisle (5-4) was pegged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth.

Colorado is 10 games behind San Francisco in the NL West and trails the Braves by 13 games in the wild card chase.

For the Rockies, righty Jason Hammel faces the Reds for the fourth time in his career while still seeking an initial victory.

The 28-year-old South Carolina native is 0-1 with a pair of no-decisions against Cincinnati with a 4.22 earned run average across 21 1/3 innings.

His last overall victory came July 29 at San Diego, when he scattered five hits and allowed a pair of runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 3-2 defeat of the Padres while walking three and striking out five.

He dropped an 8-6 verdict to Philadelphia in his last start on Aug. 3 after giving up six runs on eight hits in five innings.

The Rockies are 8-14 in Hammel's 22 starts this season.

Colorado took five of seven from the Reds last season.
