Nats, Cubs resume set at Wrigley Field

Aug 10, 2011 - 3:13 PM (Sports Network) - Young lefty Ross Detwiler faces the team he beat for his first win of 2011 tonight when the Washington Nationals head to Wrigley Field for the middle game of a weather-impacted series with the Chicago Cubs.

On Tuesday, Chien-Ming Wang tossed six innings of one-hit baseball to pick up his first win in over two years, as the Nationals held off the Cubs, 3-1.

Wang (1-2), who had a no-hitter broken up in the sixth, walked two and struck out one in his first victory since June 28, 2009. The sinkerballer made his third start of the season for the Nationals.

A 19-game winner with the New York Yankees in 2006 and 2007, Wang was limited by injury to just nine wins over 27 appearances in 2008-09. He had shoulder surgery on July 30, 2009 and missed all of last season.

Jonny Gomes and Michael Morse homered for the Nationals, who have won two in a row and seven of 10 overall.

Starlin Castro hit a solo homer for the Cubs, who have lost two straight since a seven-game winning streak.

Matt Garza (5-9) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to suffer the loss. He struck out nine and walked two.

The teams were originally scheduled the close the series tonight, but Monday's opener was postponed by rain and rescheduled to Thursday at 2:20 p.m.

Detwiler, a 25-year-old from St. Louis, had won two times in 23 big-league appearances over two seasons before opening this year with a 3-2 defeat of the Cubs in Washington on July 5.

He tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs in that start, the first of his brief career against Chicago.

In six appearances since -- one start, five relief outings -- he's 0-1 with a hold and has given up 14 hits and five runs in 15 innings.

He returned to a starting slot on Aug. 4 in Colorado and allowed two runs in five innings of a 6-3 Washington loss.

The Cubs counter with 35-year-old righty Rodrigo Lopez, a veteran of 244 big- league outings and 206 starts.

The Mexican-born veteran hasn't won in three outings since July 18, when he allowed a run in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-1 defeat of Philadelphia.

In his last start, on Aug. 4 in St. Louis, Lopez allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings while getting a no-decision in Chicago's 7-6 win.

He's 1-3 in four lifetime starts against Washington with a 4.62 earned run average across 25 1/3 innings.Washington - Ross Detwiler (1-1, 2.66) Chicago - Rodrigo Lopez (2-3, 5.17)
