Young, Goldschmidt power D-Backs past Nationals
Aug 26, 2011 - 5:04 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Chris Young and Paul Goldschmidt each homered and drove in three runs, and Wade Miley recorded his first major league win, as the Diamondbacks pulled away late for an 8-1 triumph over Washington.Miguel Montero went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice for Arizona, which took the final three contests from the Nationals. Justin Upton, playing on his 24th birthday, scored three times for the NL West leaders, who moved three games ahead of second-place San Francisco.
Miley (1-1), in his second big league start, scattered five hits over six scoreless innings.
John Lannan (8-10) yielded seven hits and a pair of runs over six frames, but suffered his third consecutive defeat.
Michael Morse had a pair of hits and knocked in the lone run for the Nationals, who scored in just two of the final 31 innings of this four-game series.
Ian Desmond struck out to leave two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second and the Nats stranded two more in the third.
Upton singled ahead of Young's homer to left in the sixth.
"C.Y. hasn't real been productive in the second half," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "We're trying to get him to be more aggressive. He took command of the situation tonight."
Morse's base hit plated Desmond in the seventh, but Brad Ziegler retired Jayson Werth and Danny Espinosa on pop-ups to end the inning.
The Diamondbacks plated three runs in each of the final two innings. Montero doubled in a run and scored on Goldschmidt's fifth homer of the year in the eighth off Tyler Clippard.
Young's sacrifice fly combined with RBI singles from Goldschmidt and Aaron Hill capped the scoring.
"I don't think this team is going to just fold over," Lannan said. "I think we're going to finish strong, not really let these games affect us."
