Flowers hits grand slam, White Sox sweep Mariners
Aug 29, 2011 - 12:09 AMVideo
Dayan Viciedo added a three-run homer for the White Sox, winners of three in a row and five of seven. Paul Konerko contributed three hits, an RBI and scored twice in the rout.
Gavin Floyd (12-10) ended up allowing five hits and a pair of runs while fanning six over 7 1/3 innings for the win.
"It was an all-around good ballgame," said Floyd. "To get run support is nice."
Josh Bard hit a two-run homer and drove in all three runs for the Mariners, who have lost three in a row.
Jason Vargas (7-12) was torched for 10 hits and nine runs over 5 2/3 innings in defeat.
The Sox snapped a scoreless deadlock in the fourth, as Konerko and Alex Rios hit back-to-back singles to start the inning and scored on Viciedo's blast to right-center.
In the sixth, Vargas loaded the bases with one out and Flowers made him pay with a long blast just over the left-field wall for a 7-0 Chicago advantage. Vargas wasn't pulled until he allowed two more base hits, then Josh Lueke got the call only to serve up RBI singles to Brent Lillibridge and Konerko.
Floyd only allowed two hits through seven innings, but the eighth spelled the end for the left-hander.
Kyle Seager reached on a third-strike wild pitch and Bard clanged a ball off the foul pole in right for a 9-2 contest. Two straight singles brought on Will Ohman, who allowed a single to load the bases before fanning Casper Wells and inducing an inning-ending line out from Adam Kennedy.
Bard's RBI groundout in the home ninth capped the scoring.
"We didn't execute," said Mariners manager Eric Wedge. "We didn't go out there and do what we needed to do offensively or on the mound."
