Angels shoot for split in set with M's

Sep 1, 2011 - 3:00 PM (Sports Network) - The LA Angels of Anaheim can't afford to lose any more ground in the AL West and hope to earn a split of a four-game series tonight against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

The Angels are 3 1/2 games behind the Texas Rangers in the division standings and suffered a 2-1 loss last night in the third installment of this set. Dan Haren was solid through 7 2/3 innings and was dealt the loss for permitting both runs and five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

"I had a really good fastball," Haren said afterwards, "and I was getting strikeouts with it."

Howie Kendrick knocked in the lone run for Anaheim, which has lost three of four and four of six games since winning six in a row.

After Thursday's game, Los Angeles will head back to the Big A for a nine-game homestand versus the Twins, Mariners and Yankees.

Ervin Santana gets the start for the Halos tonight and he was able to squeeze by the Rangers his last time out in an 8-4 win Saturday in Arlington. Santana allowed four runs in seven innings and has won seven of his last eight decisions. The righty is now 10-9 in 28 starts this season with a 3.24 ERA.

Santana defeated the Mariners on Aug. 7 with 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 victory and is 10-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 23 career starts against them. He has won his past four road starts and hasn't tasted defeat as the guest since June 21 at Florida.

Seattle has won two of three games after losing three straight and received another strong performance from ace Felix Hernandez. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner went the distance and allowed one run and five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Hernandez has five complete games this season.

Mike Carp had two hits and two RBI, while Kyle Seager finished with two hits for the Mariners. Ichiro Suzuki went 0-for-4 and saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end.

"The big story was Felix," Carp said. "That guy is amazing. He was electric again tonight."

The Mariners, who will hit the road to Oakland and Anaheim after tonight's game, agreed to a contract extension with general manager Jack Zduriencik on Wednesday. Zduriencik was in the final year of his original three-year deal. Also, infielder Jack Wilson was traded to the Braves for a player to be named later. He hit .249 in 62 games for Seattle this season.

Charlie Furbush draws the start for Seattle tonight and has lost three of his last four trips to the mound. Traded from Detroit to Seattle on July 31 in the Doug Fister deal, Furbush is 2-3 with a 6.48 ERA in six games (5 starts) with the Mariners and allowed four runs in five innings of Friday's 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Furbush, a left-hander, has faced the Angels twice this season, making one start, and sports an 0-1 record with a 5.06 ERA.

The Angels have won nine of 15 meetings with Seattle this season and are 24-10 in this series since the start of the 2010 campaign.
