Pomeranz wins debut, Rockies top Reds

Sep 11, 2011 - 11:52 PM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Drew Pomeranz sparkled in his first major league start, tossing five scoreless innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three-game series at Coors Field.

Pomeranz (1-0) gave up only two hits while fanning two and walking two for the Rockies, who won the final two games of the set. Jason Hammel gave up one run in four innings of relief to close out the victory and earn his first save of the year.

"He has a very quick arm and he competed very well," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of his starter.

Ty Wigginton clubbed a solo home run, while Jordan Pacheco and Kevin Kouzmanoff collected RBI. Eric Young Jr. added two hits for Colorado.

Chris Valaika had two hits while Joey Votto homered for the Reds, who went 4-5 on their road trip.

Edinson Volquez (5-5) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on four hits over five frames. He walked four and struck out three.

"He had good tempo and threw the ball better," Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Volquez. "He had a few walks, but we just didn't have a bunch of offense."

The Rockies broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when Wigginton belted a two- out solo shot over the wall in left for his 15th home run of the season.

They added to their lead with a run in the fifth. Young ripped a one-out single and stole second before Dexter Fowler lined out. Young then stole third and ran home on a single by Pacheco to make it a 2-0 game.

Colorado again added to its lead with two more runs in the seventh. Young led off the inning by dropping down a perfect bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a single by Fowler. Young was then able to score on a ball that got past Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez.

Fowler advanced to third on a groundout by Pacheco and Seth Smith was intentionally walked to put men on the corners with one out. Fowler was able to score on a groundout by Kouzmanoff to make it a 4-0 contest.

Cincinnati finally broke the shutout in the ninth inning, courtesy of a solo home run from Votto to account for the final score. It was his 28th of the season.
