Arizona's Corbin takes ball in Colorado

May 16, 2012 - 3:01 PM (Sports Network) - Rookie Patrick Corbin will try to pitch the Arizona Diamondbacks to consecutive wins for the first time in two weeks this evening in the opener of a two-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Corbin will make the fourth start of his major league career in tonight's meeting and has gone 2-1 with a 4.50 earned run average over the first three. The 22-year-old bounced back from his first career loss with a win over the Giants on Friday, giving up one run over seven innings in his longest outing thus far.

Corbin scattered three hits without a walk, giving up a solo homer to Melky Cabrera in the first inning. He became just the second rookie in club history to go at least seven innings with three hits allowed or less while throwing fewer than 90 pitches.

"I wanted to attack the hitters a lot more," said Corbin. "I fell behind to Melky and left a pitch middle that he took out but I think after that I kind of settled down."

The left-hander faces the Rockies for the first time hoping to give his club consecutive victories for the first time since a three-game win streak from April 29-May 1. Arizona had lost three straight and eight of its previous nine before beating Los Angeles 5-1 on Tuesday.

Miguel Montero and Jason Kubel each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the win, while Wade Miley allowed one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out five through 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.

"We put some runs on the board and kept them at bay, so it was a good win," said Miley. "I was able to command the fastball, get ahead and work off of that."

The Rockies are also coming off a much-needed victory as they bested the Giants 5-4 on Tuesday to end their four-game losing streak with just their second victory in 11 games.

After watching San Francisco tie the game with a three-run seventh, Marco Scutaro hit a go-ahead homer to lead off the top of the ninth inning after Rex Brothers pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Rafael Betancourt fanned Nate Schierholtz with two aboard in the ninth to record his seventh save of the season.

"Sometimes we pitch good and we don't hit, sometimes we hit good and we don't pitch. We just need to put those two things together and you're gonna see good results," said Scutaro.

The Rockies will counter the young Corbin with 49-year-old Jamie Moyer, who is searching for his first win since April 17. He is 0-1 in four starts since and has lasted five innings in each of his last three outings. He has been charged with 14 earned runs, 28 hits and four homers in that three-start span.

The left-handed Moyer lost to the Dodgers on Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out a season high-matching seven. Still, he fell to 1-3 with a 4.66 ERA in seven starts.

Moyer will face the Diamondbacks for the first time since Aug. 18, 2009 and is 4-1 against them lifetime with a 2.40 ERA.

The D-Backs won 13 of 18 versus the Rockies a season ago, including six of nine in Colorado, but dropped two of three on the road versus the Rockies in mid-April.
