Angels give Shoemaker first start vs M's
Sep 20, 2013 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Matt Shoemaker makes his Major League debut in a fill-in role on Friday night, when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim host the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series at Angel Stadium.Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008, Shoemaker gets the start in place of staff ace Jered Weaver, who's unavailable due to forearm tightness.
Shoemaker began his climb through the organization in Single-A in 2008, was 5-1 in 23 appearances with two teams in 2009 and 9-9 in 23 more outings at Single- and Triple-A in 2010.
The following season was divided between Double- and Triple-A, and he's exclusive been at Triple-A Salt Lake in 2012 and 2013 while combining to go 22-23 in 58 starts.
In 65 career outings at Triple-A, he's 24-26 with a 5.32 earned run average and 305 strikeouts in 397 1/3 innings of work.
He's opposed by 23-year-old righty Erasmo Ramirez, who makes a fourth try for a first win since Aug. 29.
Ramirez was 5-1 on the season after a 3-2 victory over Houston in which he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings, but he's 0-1 in three starts since - all losses by the Mariners.
Most recently, Ramirez was touched for five runs on eight hits in four innings of a 12-2 defeat at St. Louis on Sept. 15, a loss that saw his ERA climb from 4.57 to 4.98.
He last faced the Angels on Aug. 24 and dropped a 5-1 verdict after giving up three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
On Thursday in Detroit, Victor Martinez went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBI to lead the Tigers past the Mariners, 5-4.
The Mariners' Dustin Ackley was 1-for-5 with a three-run home run. Raul Ibanez went 1-for-4 and added an RBI.
Seattle starter James Paxton lasted five innings and gave up three runs, struck out three and walked four. He left the game with the lead, but got a no-decision. Reliever Charlie Furbish (2-6) picked up the loss for Seattle after allowing one run in his one inning of work.
On Wednesday in Oakland, Josh Hamilton belted a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, then delivered a sacrifice fly in the 11th to rally the Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Athletics.
Hamilton's heroics enabled the Angels to claim the rubber match of the three- game series.
Mike Trout added a two-run homer in the triumph, the Angels' seventh in nine games. J.C. Gutierrez (1-4), one of four Anaheim relievers that combined for five scoreless innings, picked up the win after working the bottom of the 10th.
The Angels won nine of the first 16 games with the Mariners heading into the weekend, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 11-8.
