Lester returns home to face Mariners
Aug 3, 2007 - 2:49 PM Boston (66-42) at Seattle (59-47) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - Jon Lester starts on Friday when the Boston Red Sox open up a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.
Lester, who grew up in nearby Tacoma, Washington, will be making his third start of the season after overcoming non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and will have a large contingent of friends and family in attendance.
The 23-year-old lefthander made one start last season in Seattle, yielding five runs and eight hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision. Since his return to the Red Sox, Lester (1-0, 4.26 ERA) has been solid, earning a win over at Cleveland in his first start and not factoring in the decision last Saturday at Tampa Bay.
The Mariners will counter with Horacio Ramirez (6-3, 6.52). The veteran lefthander got knocked around by Boston earlier this season, allowing seven runs and 11 hits in four innings on May 3.
The Red Sox, who own an eight-game lead over the New York Yankees (58-50) in the American League East, have lost their last eight games at Safeco Field, dating back to last season.
Seattle is chasing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (63-44) in the AL West and trails the Cleveland Indians (61-47) by one game in the wild card race.
