Rockies hold off Marlins

Apr 3, 2014 - 6:25 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Pacheco had three hits and drove in a run as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Miami Marlins, 6-5, in the third installment of a four-game series.

Charlie Blackmon and Michael Cuddyer both contributed two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who dropped the first two games of the season. Jordan Lyles (1-0) picked up the win after giving up four runs on five hits with five strikeouts over five-plus innings.

Lyles was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier in the day to take the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood, who landed on the 15- day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI for the Marlins, who lost their first game of the season. Henderson Alvarez (0-1), who closed out his 2013 campaign with the fifth no-hitter in franchise history, was peppered for all six runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks over three-plus frames.

"We gave it a run there in the ninth ... almost got it done," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

Colorado started the scoring in the opening frame. After Blackmon hit a lead- off single, Cuddyer grounded into a force out that got Blackmon out at second. Cuddyer moved up to second on Alvarez's throwing error, then came home after Carlos Gonzalez doubled on a grounder up the middle.

Troy Tulowitzki's single put runners on the corners and Justin Morneau's single to left brought Gonzalez around. Nolan Arenado's single loaded the bases with one out. Pacheco's grounder skipped off the mound and up the middle to score Tulowitzki for a 3-0 lead.

The Marlins got one back in the bottom half. Derek Dietrich lined right down the left field line for a double with one out. After Stanton struck out, Garrett Jones stroked a RBI line drive to center to make it 3-1

The Rockies took a 6-1 lead in the fourth. Arenado reached on a throwing error, Pacheco singled, and D.J. LeMahieu made it to first on a force-out attempt. Dietrich threw to Hechavarria at second and Pacheco was called safe. Miami manager Mike Redmond challenged the call believing that Hechavarria's foot was on the bag, but the call was upheld. Arenado rushed home on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.

After Alvarez walked Lyles to load the bases, Kevin Slowey entered the game in relief. Slowey walked Blackmon and then gave up a sac fly to Cuddyer, which scored LeMahieu to make it 6-1.

Stanton drove a fastball into the Marlins bullpen over in right field, scoring Dietrich, who was hit by a pitch, making it a 6-3 game in the bottom of the sixth. Lyles walked Jones and Adam Ottavino entered the game in relief. He immediately gave up a double to Casey McGehee, and Jones scored two batters later on a wild pitch.

LaTroy Hawkins came in to close the game for the Rockies in the ninth. He allowed a single to Hechavarria to open the inning and then struck out Greg Dobbs. Hechavarria moved up a base on a wild pitch with Christian Yelich at the plate and then advanced to third after Yelich grounded out. Dietrich was walked to put the go-ahead run represented by Stanton at the plate.

"It was very uncomfortable with Stanton at the plate," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

Stanton drove a single to left, bringing in Hechavarria to get the Marlins within one, but Jones popped up to end the game.

Game Notes

Alvarez made his first career start against the Rockies ... Lyles was acquired from the Houston Astros in December along with outfielder Brandon Barnes for outfielder Dexter Fowler ... The Marlins had won 12 of the last 18 games against the Rox at home ... Miami went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
