Phils try to get untracked against Fernandez

Apr 11, 2014 - 2:19 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The hottest young pitcher in baseball to begin the season, Miami's Jose Fernandez, gets his third start on Friday night when the Marlins visit Citizens Bank Park to open a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Both the Marlins and Phillies enter the series on four-game losing streaks. Miami, in fact, hasn't won since Fernandez's last start, when he tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless three-hit ball in a 5-0 win over San Diego on Sunday.

In four games since, the Marlins have been outscored, 26-10.

The reigning National League Rookie of the Year started three times against the Phillies in his initial full season in the majors and won the lone decision while allowing a single run across 18 innings. In one trip to Philadelphia, he threw seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 win.

The Phillies, meanwhile, will counter with veteran A.J. Burnett, in his first season with the team after signing a free-agent deal in the offseason.

He was hit hard in his most recent start, allowing eight runs in 5 2/3 innings while walking four batters in an 8-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Burnett has faced the Marlins twice in his career and is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA.

On Thursday in Washington, for the second straight game, the Nationals hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning. This time, Ian Desmond's grand slam helped Washington secure a 7-1 victory over the Marlins.

Marcell Ozuna hit a solo homer in the loss for the Marlins, while Tom Koehler (1-1) got the start and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings.

In Philadelphia, Ryan Braun went 6-for-12 with three homers, 10 RBI and five runs scored during the Milwaukee Brewers' three-game sweep of the Phillies. On Thursday, Braun went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Brewers' 6-2 victory.

Marlon Byrd hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs for the Phillies, who have lost four in a row.

Cliff Lee (2-1) got the start and gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out eight over six full frames.

Philadelphia was 12-7 against the Marlins last season.
