Marlins resume set with Padres behind Fernandez

May 9, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins send young pitching phenom Jose Fernandez to the mound Friday in the continuation of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Fernandez is 4-1 in seven starts with a 1.74 earned run average and has surrendered just two earned runs in his last four appearances. Those two runs came in a 5-4 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, as Fernandez recorded a no-decision and struck out 10 with four walks in seven innings.

The right-hander has fanned at least six batters in every start this season and 10 or more in three of the previous four trips to the hill. Fernandez has a major league-best 65 K's on the season and the Marlins are 5-2 when he pitches. Fernandez got the win in a 5-0 verdict versus San Diego on April 5, when he tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and scattered three hits.

Fernandez has won both of his career starts against the Padres.

The Padres counter with Tyson Ross and have won two straight and four of his last five trips to the mound. Ross didn't receive a decision in Sunday's 4-3 win at Arizona and pitched very well, allowing three runs -- one earned -- in seven innings.

Ross, who is 3-3 with a 3.30 ERA in seven trips to the hill, is 2-1 in four home assignments and will make his first start against the Marlins. Ross lost to Miami in relief last June 30 in a 6-2 defeat at Marlins Park, as he gave up four runs in one-third of an inning.

Miami opened its 11-game road trip with Thursday's 3-1 win in 11 innings and stud outfielder Giancarlo Stanton put the club on top for good with a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning. He leads the majors with 40 RBI and is first in the National League in homers (11).

"That was quite a homer," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "I don't know if I've ever seen a ball hit that hard. I didn't think, especially a righty, could hit an (opposite-field) home run here. That was a perfect time. A great at-bat."

Derek Dietrich drove in a run and Marlins starter Jacob Turner was strong in the no-decision, allowing one run in six innings. A.J. Ramos earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief and Steve Cishek nailed down his seventh save with a scoreless 11th frame.

The Marlins have won five in a row and nine of their last 10 games and improved to 3-10 on the road.

San Diego has lost three in a row and seven of its last nine games, and fell to 2-5 on its 10-game homestand.

Everth Cabrera had two hits and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy homered. Kennedy struck out 12 batters and walked two, while allowing one run and four hits in seven innings of work. Dale Thayer allowed Stanton's homer in the 11th.

"Well pitched on both sides," said Padres manager Bud Black.

The Padres lost two of the three games in south Florida early last month and are 6-11 in the past 17 meetings between the teams.
