Bedard hopes to get on a roll as Rays host Tribe

May 10, 2014 - 2:52 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Having snapped his 15-start winless stretch, Erik Bedard now tries to win back-to-back starts for the first time since the 2012 campaign when the Tampa Bay Rays entertain the Cleveland Indians again at Tropicana Field.

Bedard had been 0-9 since his last win as a starter until turning in his best outing of the season Sunday at Yankee Stadium. The lefty gave up one run on six hits and a walk over six innings to notch his first win as a starter since June 26 of last season. He'll aim to win consecutive starts for the first time since Aug. 6 and 12 of 2012 when as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he beat Arizona and San Diego, respectively.

In 13 career starts against the Indians, Bedard is 2-3 with a 5.00 ERA. He hasn't beaten Cleveland since July 8, 2006 and is 0-3 with a 6.45 ERA in eight starts versus the Indians since then.

Right-hander Zach McAllister will try to avoid losing his third straight decision for the Indians. He didn't get a decision Monday against Minnesota after allowing five hits and fanning eight in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. McAllister is 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA in four starts against Tampa Bay.

Last night, Mike Aviles capped a five-run seventh inning with a three-run homer in Cleveland's 6-3 decision to extend the Indians' season-high winning streak to four games.

Michael Brantley clubbed the tying homer in the seventh before Aviles launched his second of the year to left off Brandon Gomes. Yan Gomes gave the Indians the lead with an RBI single.

Cleveland's Corey Kluber (3-3) had nine strikeouts and allowed nine hits and a pair of runs over 6 2/3 innings. Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi logged a career-high 11 strikeouts while giving up five hits in five scoreless frames.

"For me when I get in a jam or get runners on base, my biggest focus is to avoid a big inning," said Kluber.

David DeJesus drove in two runs for the Rays, who have lost four in a row overall and six straight at home. This marks their longest home losing streak within one season since June 2005 (6 games). The club-record home losing streak is 11 games in May-June 1999.

"It's crazy," said DeJesus. "We get the winning run on every night and we haven't been able to pull it out."

The Rays won four of six versus the Indians last season.
