Padres seek another outburst against Cubs

May 24, 2014 - 1:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres broke out of their slump in a big way and will try to keep the momentum going Saturday in the third test of a four-game series versus the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park.

The Padres hammered the Cubs, 11-1, on Friday night and got off to an 8-0 lead after four innings. Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal both homered and combined for four RBI, while Chase Headley drove in three runs and Cameron Maybin scored three times.

Tim Stauffer threw five shutout innings for the win and struck out five.

"We talked about it internally about the experience," Padres manager Bud Black said of Stauffer. "He's been out there before. Giving us five was great based on what we have to do tomorrow."

San Diego ended a four-game slide and scored 10 runs in the previous four games. It is 1-3 on a six-game homestand.

Billy Buckner is expected to make the start for the Padres Saturday and he went 3-2 with a 2.89 in five starts with Triple-A El Paso. The righty has made 23 starts with the Royals, D'backs and Angels.

Buckner replaces long reliever Donn Roach in the rotation. Roach tossed the eighth inning in Friday's rout of the Cubs.

Chicago is 1-1 on its 10-game road trip and couldn't build on Thursday's 5-1 victory in the opener of this series. In Friday's loss, starting pitcher Edwin Jackson was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in four innings.

Wesley Wright pitched two innings of relief and gave up three runs.

"Today was just a terrible job making adjustments all around," said Jackson. "No excuses, just flat out terrible job at making adjustments."

The Cubs, who had won four of five games, scored their lone run of the game on Welington Castillo's RBI single in the seventh.

Chicago still has to visit San Francisco and Milwaukee on the trip, and will hand pitching duties to Travis Wood on Saturday. Wood has a 4-4 record and a 4.61 earned run average in nine starts and has been on a roll of late, winning two straight and three of four outings.

Wood is coming off Sunday's 4-2 win over the Brewers in which he limited them to a pair of runs in seven innings. Wood, a left-hander, looks to improve on his road record this season and is 1-3 in four away starts.

In six games (5 starts) against the Padres, Wood has a lifetime mark of 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA.

The Padres took four of seven last season versus the Cubs, winning two of three at home.
